I'm slowly working my way out of my writing slump, and I've decided that one way to get back into writing is to talk about writing. And so, to that end, I am hereby resurrecting my "first draft" posts!

For those of you unfamiliar with them (or who don't remember them -- and no wonder, as it's been almost two years since my last one), "first draft" posts are where I post the first draft of one of my fics and talk about the changes I made, and why I made them.

Up today: the first draft of "On the Benefits of Having an Attic." The finished version of the fic is here: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=35964

And here's discussion about the first draft: )

And here's the first draft: )

It's been ages since I've done a first draft post, and since I am feeling in the mood to be reflective, I've decided it's time to post the first draft of Nameless.

ETA: This is a retrospective look at the writing process for an already finished fic. The final version of the fic can be accessed through the hyperlink above; what's below is the first draft for that fic, and some general musings about how the writing went.

I need to jump-start my writing muse, so it's time for another "first draft" post. And instead of trying to do these in some semblance of order -- or even some vague relationship to when the fics were written -- I'll just go ahead and reflect on the first draft of my most recently completed fic, To the Rescue.

Anyone who's watched this journal knew it was just a matter of time . . . and here it is, the extremely problematic, yes-I'm-embarrassed-to-post-this first draft of As Simple As That.

Strangely enough, looking at it now I'm amazed at how much made it into the final version. And the beginning isn't too bad, although I do think it bounces too much between suddenly fluffy and suddenly angsty moments -- the overall tone got much more even after I switched to the Doctor's POV. As for the end . . . ack, cringe.

Not sure if anyone else is even remotely interested in these, but personally I enjoy going back and looking at snatches of my first drafts, which is why I keep them. It helps me be reflective as a writer and reminds me that good things can come from inauspicious beginnings. And as I am still having issues with my current story-in-progress, I am going to publicly post the first draft of "Match Point".

Since I figure I should start posting links to my own fic on my own journal, I will start with the story I am fondest of, the story which pretty much single-handedly got me back into fanfic writing (and into fanfic writing for DW) by forcing itself into my head and demanding to be told. And, since part of the point of this journal is to be reflective about my own writing, I am going to post a bonus -- the first draft of the first words I ever wrote for the story, which are also the first words of DW fan fiction I ever wrote (yes, they came before the first story I ended up posting).

Title: Miles from Aberdeen
Rating: G
Characters: Sarah Jane Smith, Ten, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Harry Sullivan, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Length: 7 chapters, 19,409 words
Spoilers: S2 of Doctor Who (especially School Reunion), Genesis of the Daleks, Brain of Morbius and Pyramids of Mars.
Summary: Getting left in Aberdeen requires Sarah to make more than one type of journey.

So I have gone ahead and posted the new fanfic as the abbreviated version of the previous story, including only the piece that I really liked.

Here is the link to the posted story: http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=24283

And, in case anyone actually ever reads this and is interested, here is the full, all-five-scenes story (spoilers for "Turn Left," "Runaway Bride," "Smith and Jones," "Shakespeare Code," "Fires of Pompeii" and "Sontaran Stratagem / Poison Sky") : Five Scenes that Never Happened from Series 3 and 4 )
