Next up on the countdown to Eleven is the fourth story in my list of 10 favorite Tenth Doctor stories (going in broadcast order), and it's Army of Ghosts / Doomsday! (Yes, cleverly combining them into one episode so I can squeeze more into the count, but you know, back in the old days you would get 4- or 6-part stories all considered the same episode, so I really don't consider this cheating.)
This two-parter is by far my favorite series finale of New Who. Some of the others, I'm sad to say, are not only not my favorites, they make my "10 worst episode" list (*cough* Last of the Time Lords *cough*). But this one is really well done.
Favorite parts:
-- The Doctor's arrival at Torchwood. "The moral high ground is mine" -- such a Doctor comment (and does the fact that I particularly love it because I could see Tom Baker saying that make me biased? If so, so be it.) But even better than the marvelous line was the way the Doctor was completely flustered by the admittedly bizarre reception he received when he opened the door. David Tennant's acting there was marvelous. (". . . and you are?")
-- The Doctor making a mess with the glass window and the look on his face when he "gives up" on convincing Yvonne to halt the ghost shift. ("Any chance of a cup of tea?")
-- And yet another piece of fabulous dialogue (yes, I've just realized that one of the things I really love about these episodes is the dialogue): "When Torchwood comes to write my complete history, don't tell people I traveled through time and space with her mother."
-- The moment when the Daleks come out of the void ship: I don't know about the rest of you, but that was pre-LJ days for me, I had not been spoiled at all, and let me tell you, I was not expecting that! I think my reaction can be summed up as "holy #$%*."
-- When Pete has kidnapped the Doctor to Pete's World, and asks him to fix everything, and the Doctor says "Do you think I can do that?" and Pete says just the one word: "Yes." Love that moment, love it love it love it. And then the Doctor smiles, and we know that he now will proceed to go fix it all!
-- When the Doctor confronts the Daleks, and his little speech about the sonic screwdriver, and oh my YES it is good at opening doors!
-- The ultra-secret, unimaginable "Time Lord science" turns out to be the one piece of Time Lord science that we've seen in almost every episode from the very beginning: it's bigger on the inside. That was genius. So was the fact that it turned out to have horrific implications.
-- The goodbye on the beach. I'm not a Ten/Rose shipper in that I really don't care about the relationship between the Doctor and Rose (although I do believe there's something there), but even I have to say that it's a very heartwrenching scene that was well-written and acted.
Next up: enter Martha Jones!
