Title: The Day(ish) Night(ish) Time(ish) of the Five(ish) Doctors Reboot
Fandom: The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot
Rating: All ages
Characters: "Peter Davison" (5ish Doctors version), "Colin Baker" (5ish Doctors version), "Sylvester McCoy" (5ish Doctors version), "Steven Moffat" (5ish Doctors version), other cameos (5ish Doctors versions)
Disclaimer: This is a work of fan fiction, offered freely.
Summary: Steven Moffat wants to do another multi-Doctor special. Will Peter, Colin, and Sylvester get any voicemail messages this time? Read on, because this fic is not about some flash-in-the-pan 500-million-dollar picture! This is important!
A/N: Written for thinkatory for Yuletide 2014. If you've wandered in without knowing the fandom, please be aware that character names notwithstanding, this fic is not about any of the actual actors or creators of Doctor Who. These are parody characters who appeared in The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. Which you should go watch right away, because the real Peter Davison (writer and director of that special) is a comedy genius.

Thanks go to Persiflage for the beta.

I'm going out of town for the weekend, and I may not have internet access, so before I leave, I'd like to wish everyone on my flist a very happy new year!

I'll post my Yuletide story to my journal when I get back, although if anyone wants to know which one it was before that, they can of course just go to my AO3 page after the 1st. If anyone wants to guess, I only wrote one story, and it was once again in a fandom that will surprise precisely no one.

I got "Curse of Fatal Death" fic for Yuletide! Twice!!!

One is this great Madness treat that takes a seriously brilliant, cracky premise and follows it through to its glorious cracky completion. (As a side note, I will never be able to use a whisk with a straight face again. Never.) Bake Cake Not War

The other is my main Yuletide gift, and it's as if my author looked at all the various CoFD prompts in my letter and said, "That's what you want? Okay, I'll give you ALL OF THEM." It's just completely ridiculous, and cracktastic, and full of win: title to be explained later

I've been having fun reading through the rest of the archive, too. As for the guessing game of Yuletide, I think that, for the first time ever, I might have identified the author of a Yuletide story before reveals. (Not one of my gifts, though; this is a completely different fic.) And, for the first time ever, I'm wondering if I've been identified by someone as the author of my fic. Wondering about that is almost as much fun as wondering if I'm right about my own guess. Even if it means that I wasn't very stealthy this time around. (I wasn't very stealthy. I am never very stealthy. I have lack of stealth.)

My Yuletide fic is driving me slightly crazy. I get an idea for the next bit, I write it, then I get stuck. Then I'm stuck, stuck, stuck . . . then I get an idea for the next bit, I write it, then I'm stuck again. It's like my muse is wading through a pool of treacle or something.

On the bright side, I've passed the magic 1,000-word mark, and it's only mid-November, so odds are it'll actually be finished early despite the crazy stop-and-go progress. I just wish I could keep the writing going for more than a small bit at a time. Flow, damn you, flow!
dbskyler: (mr smith)
Yuletide is over, which means I can now reveal that I wrote The Recorder in the Room, a Sarah Jane Adventures fic. My recipient requested a fic on the development of Rani and Clyde's romantic relationship, which was a bit of a challenge for me because although I do ship them, I also am not someone who generally writes shippy fic. The result is probably the least romantic fic ever written about a romance, but fortunately my recipient seemed to like it, so whew!

It turns out that one of my gift fics was from someone on my flist, [personal profile] paranoidangel42, who wrote me fic about Gita saving the world after reading my two recent fics about Gita saving the world. We have now decided that Gita Saving the World should be A Thing, and so I am hereby Declaring It So. There is even a Teaspoon series for it, here. If anyone reading this is inclined to write fic about Gita saving the world -- and you know you want to *g* -- please feel free to add your fic to the series.
dbskyler: (Sarah SJA)
I got not one, but TWO wonderful new Gita fics, and I love them both for lots and lots of reasons! But here on my journal, I can confess that I especially love them both because not only did they give me Gita, but they gave me Sarah. Which is not what I asked for, but what I now realize I secretly also really wanted. In fact, it was so much of a secret that I didn't even realize it myself until I got it, twice. I was mulling over what made me happy about my gift fics, and of course Gita because I love her, and I asked for her, and there's not nearly enough fic with her . . . but then I realized that the presence of Sarah -- well-written Sarah -- warmed another very special area of my heart. I still miss Elisabeth Sladen so much, but Sarah Jane Smith will never be gone as long as we have fic. And now I have TWO more fics with her, and with Gita. What a great Yuletide!

I've been plugging away at my Yuletide fic, and I had a moment of "Oh no, is my recipient going to like this? Am I using the requested characters enough? Am I using them in the right way?"

And then I thought, "No time to change it! Forward!"

So, I don't know if what I'm writing is any good, but at least I'm waffling about it less?

Also, I've passed the 1,000 word mark!

Bears!

So, apparently hosting a ficathon with a late-November deadline was not the best way to get going on my Yuletide writing. I was way too caught up in it, and way too caught up in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary, to make any significant progress on Yuletide writing. I have finally come back to it, though, and I'm slowly making progress. I've been using WrittenKitten, and it's been really helpful, especially since I haven't passed the magic 1,000-word mark yet. Right now I have 5 kittens to go! Well, 5 kittens, plus however many additional kittens it takes me to actually finish the fic. Right now I don't know how many that will be; I'll have to wait and see where I am once I've gotten a few more kittens.

I feel badly because the last time I did Yuletide, my fic was finished early, and it was well over the word limit, and this time it looks like it's going to be down to the wire in terms of both time and words. Although I guess neither of those things ultimately matters in the end. My recipient won't get to read the fic any earlier if it's turned in before the deadline, and I really do think that fic length is unrelated to fic quality. I once recced a fic on Calufrax that had only 52 words. I wonder if I hold the record for reccer of the shortest fic?

Anyway, this Yuletide fic of mine does have to be longer than it currently is, but instead of just writing it, I feel like I have to anxiously watch the word count go up until I've at least reached 1,000. But after that, I will hopefully be able to relax and just write. And, at least there's a website that will count up the words for me, and give me kittens along the way.

Also, it's [community profile] fic_rush this weekend! Hurrah!
dbskyler: (Ten looking up)
Hello! If you're following my LJ, then you'll see this; if you're not following it, then you don't need to see this.

But if you do see this, I need to say something about the two most recent fics I posted. If you're reading this, then chances are you've seen those fics, and if you've seen those fics, then no doubt you've noticed that they are very similar to one of my Yuletide requests. I think if my recipient did that to me, it would worry me, so in case it's worrying you, I want to leave you a few words of reassurance.

If you're writing my SJA request: yes, I just wrote two Gita fics, and I requested a Gita fic from you. As you can see, I was telling you the truth when I said I adore Gita! But what I wrote is not what I want for Yuletide; what I want for Yuletide is what you are going to write for me! Something I didn't come up with! I can't wait to read it.

If you're writing one of my other requests: yes, I just wrote two Gita fics, but that's because I'm doing a Whoniverse ficathon right now. It doesn't mean that I want a Gita fic more than I want the other things I requested. I'd love to receive any of my requests, truly! I can't wait to read it.

I know you can't respond without giving stuff away, and you may never even see this, but just in case, I thought this needed to be said. Hope this has reassured you, and thanks again for being my Yuletide author!
dbskyler: (Sarah from Hand of Fear)
Yuletide scares the hell out of me. Seriously, the whole "what if my recipient requests something I can't write?" issue is terrifying. The first year I signed up for Yuletide, which was several years ago now, I felt extremely lucky because my recipient requested something that I felt I could write. After several years off, I have finally screwed up my courage to do Yuletide again, and I just read my assignment . . .

. . . and I must be extremely lucky again, because my recipient has requested something that I think I can write. :D

In fact, the list of likes and dislikes in my recipient's letter are not at all dissimilar to the likes and dislikes I put in my own letter.

Did I get extremely lucky twice? Or are the odds of matching up with someone who really wants smut (or something else I absolutely can't write) smaller than I fear? The only other possibility I can think of is that the matching program used my Yuletide letter as part of its algorithm, which seems unlikely. ; )
dbskyler: (Sarah SJA)
All four of my Yuletide nominations have been approved, including Sarah Jane Adventures!

I'm excited, because I really want to do Yuletide this year. It's been too long!
dbskyler: (this is a fake)
So Yuletide signups are open, and I am thinking about actually doing it this year. Part of me is petrified at the idea of committing to writing something as my muse is still very unreliable, but I have been feeling more in the mood to write lately, and a commitment might be just what I need to really get going again. Also, I took a look at the nominated fandoms, and I was able to find 4 fandoms that I think I could offer. But I still get really worried about getting a pairing request for characters that weren't paired in canon, as that's a popular type of request and something that I have a hard time writing (not only am I bad at writing ship!fic, but if it's not a canon pairing, it usually strikes me as OOC). However, apparently you can now add a gen/het/slash tag to your offer/request, and although they can't promise you'll match on that, they'll take it into account? That makes me feel slightly less nervous about it. Come on, genfic requests!

Of course, I still owe a fic to the incredibly patient [livejournal.com profile] justice_turtle, who has not once asked me about the status of the story I owe to him from, um, well, ages ago now. But perhaps if I sign up for Yuletide, I will be spurred to hurry up and finish his story too.
dbskyler: (She does by me)
I've decided not to do Yuletide after all. I'm just not feeling it this year, for several reasons. First, it's looking like I might have a busy work month. I also notice that two of the four fandoms I wanted to offer have no requests -- how sad! -- and one of the fandoms I wanted to request has no other requests, and possibly no offers. (I realize you can't tell that for sure from the summary, but if no one else wants it, what are the odds that someone has offered it?) Finally, my biggest fanfic wish right now is to have something posted on my WIP by the end of the year, and if there's any chance of that happening, I need to keep myself free from other fic-writing commitments. So, no Yuletide. Instead I'll just sit back and enjoy the action from the sidelines, and look forward to reading the archive once it opens.

In other news, my S5 DVD boxset has arrived! I'm starting to make my way through the extras. Any particularly good commentaries I should listen to right away?

I also had the slightly surreal experience of seeing Matt Smith on the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Doctor Who on American mainstream network television! Go Matt! And go Craig for being a huge fan and inviting him on! Now we need to get Matt onto other talk shows before he wraps up the Utah filming and leaves the country. Conan, you seem like the type of person who might be a closet Doctor Who fan, how about it?
dbskyler: (dalek tea)
Just passing on that Yuletide is open for sign-ups (although you probably want to wait if you can -- the database is getting slammed at the moment). Sign-ups will be open until Friday, Nov. 19, at "around 9 p.m. U.S. Eastern time." You can find a really nicely laid out list of eligible fandoms here: http://random.fangirling.net/fun/yuletide/yuletide_fandoms_filters.html

Lots of cool fandoms on the list, including Sarah Jane Adventures, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Misfits of Science (yes, someone nominated MISFITS OF SCIENCE), K-9 and Company (someone nominated K-9 and Company?) and my favorite: Moffat's Doctor Who!

I kid you not! Because you know what I found on the list? The one, the only:

CURSE OF FATAL DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm laughing already, because the character list includes Curse of Fatal Death spoilers ) And here I thought I had my fandoms all figured out.

*ponders the options*
dbskyler: (Mr. Smith)
The eligible fandom list just came out for Yuletide, and Sarah Jane Adventures made the list!! Actually, I initially thought it hadn't made the list and I was all set to write a "special bonus whimpering" plea for reconsideration (seriously, that's what they call it) when I thought to check under "The Sarah Jane Adventures," and there it was!

*happy dance*

Now I just have to decide if I'm willing to sign up and write a 1,000-word story to a strict deadline in return for the possibility of getting Gita!fic. What to do, what to do . . .
dbskyler: (Rassilon)
So not only did I write a Yuletide story, but I ended up writing a drabble-ish little thing for Yuletide Madness because the prompt was so cool and I couldn't resist. Since I have some fellow Gilbert and Sullivan fans on my flist, I've decided it's worth sharing here even though it's just a short and silly "Yuletide folly" (I like the sound of that; sounds very G&S-ish).

Title: The Pirates of Iolanthe
Fandoms: The Pirates of Penzance and Iolanthe (yes, they count as two different fandoms for Yuletide!)
Rating: G
Characters: Pirates, Daughters and Fairies
Summary: What if the pirates from Pirates of Penzance, having resumed their ranks and legislative duties, were in the House of Lords during Iolanthe? (Note -- this was El Staplador's brilliant prompt; I was just inspired by it.)
A/N: Written for El Staplador in the 2009 Yuletide Madness challenge. It's not quite drabble-length, but it rhymes!
Disclaimer: No disclaimer needed because public domain, baby!!!!

Time to post the story I wrote for Yuletide, and the fandom was . . . Red Dwarf!!!!

(Yes, you read that correctly. I made the huge genre leap from writing for Doctor Who, a British science fiction television show, to writing for Red Dwarf, a different British science fiction television show! My range is so impressive, isn't it?)

Thanks go to my recipient, [personal profile] xparrot, who went easy on me for my first Yuletide by giving me a great prompt, and gave me an excuse to pull out all my old videotapes and fall in love with this show again. I hope you had as much fun reading this as I had writing it.

Title: Upgrade
Fandom: Red Dwarf
Rating: Teen (for general Red Dwarfiness)
Characters: Lister, Rimmer, the Cat, Kryten
Beta: Eledhwen
Summary: The crew want to give Rimmer's hologram program an upgrade.
A/N: Written for Xparrot in the 2009 Yuletide challenge.
Disclaimer: This is a work of fan fiction, offered freely. Red Dwarf and all characters belong to, um, some entity that's not me. It's probably Grant Naylor Productions, or the BBC, or the Jupiter Mining Corporation, but I don't really know. Sorry I can't be more helpful, and would you like some toast?
