Summary: Sarah takes leave of the Eleventh Doctor. A missing scene from "Death of the Doctor."
A/N: Inspired by and based upon this gorgeous fanart drawn by [livejournal.com profile] tempestas_inu.

With a huge grin, the Doctor enfolded Jo into his arms. Sarah turned away, giving the two of them this moment.

She knew what Jo was feeling because she had felt it herself at Deffrey Vale, when she had been the one to finally see the Doctor again after decades. She knew what it must have been like for Jo in the time since she last saw the Doctor; she knew the thoughts that must have inserted themselves into that busy life of hers, because the thoughts had inserted themselves into her own busy life, too:

"I wonder what the Doctor is doing right now?"

"Will he ever come back to see me, like he promised?"

And the most recurrent, the most insidious thought of all:

"Does the Doctor even still remember me?"

Seeing him again was not just the joy of reuniting with an old and treasured friend; it was reassurance that the Doctor remembered. Not until Deffrey Vale had Sarah truly learned that his failure to return didn't mean he no longer cared about her. Jo was now learning the same.

Sarah looked back at where the Doctor and Jo were embracing, and she smiled at the sight. It was good, and it was fitting, and it was right. Although -- yes, she had to admit it, she wanted her own hug from him, too. But he would be itching to be off soon, and she didn't want to hold him up with her silly human needs. After all, she had seen him now five times over the last four years, and she couldn't ask for more than that from him, she really couldn't. If she badly wanted to take him into her arms and hold him, it was only because she had been told that he was dead, but obviously he wasn't and so she didn't need a hug then, right? She was stronger than that.

Except if she was going to stay stronger than that, then she had better leave, right now.

Stealing one last glance at the two of them together, she turned and determinedly began to head towards the TARDIS door. Best just to slip quietly away, like the Doctor himself would do. He of all people would understand.

She was almost to the door when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Surprised, she turned. There he was standing behind her, his arms opened wide, his expression warm and just a little wistful.

"Come now, Smith," he said. "You weren't actually going to walk out of my TARDIS without hugging me goodbye, were you?"

Her heart felt suddenly light. "I thought you didn't like goodbyes," she said.

"New body; new rules," he replied, his arms still open in entreaty.

She rushed to him, wrapping her arms around him. One of his hands moved to cup her head while an arm slipped around her waist, holding her close. She felt the rise and fall of his chest as he breathed, and she could hear the steady beat of both his hearts. Relaxing against him, she let her senses fill with the knowledge that he was here and with her, safe and sound and alive.

Jo had been correct, she mused. No matter how the TARDIS changed, it still smelled the same, and so did he.

When she eventually felt his hug loosen, she lifted her head and took a step back, letting her arms fall to her sides. But instead of letting go as she had expected, he moved his hands up to cup her face, and then she felt his lips against her forehead as he gave her a gentle kiss. "Thank you for remembering me, Sarah," he said.

She looked up at him in surprise. "You don't have to thank me for that, Doctor. You're not an easy man to forget."

"I'm not?" he responded. "That's good. Because memories are easier to lose than you might think, and I'd hate to be lost."

She laughed. "Then you'll never be lost, since there's no way I'll ever forget you."

She thought she saw something in his expression for a moment, but as quickly as it was there, it was gone again. Instead he grinned, and it really was astounding how despite the huge changes of regeneration, his grin still remained the same.

"Until the next time?" he said.

"I thought we just had a hug goodbye," she replied teasingly.

"Nonsense. I don't like goodbyes; you know that," he responded with perfect seriousness, as if he hadn't said the exact opposite just a few minutes ago.

Sarah smiled. "Until the next time, then," she agreed.

Jo came down from where she had waited, and the two of them started towards the door. At the last moment, Sarah turned.

There the Doctor stood, at the center of the TARDIS, hands on the console controls. Suddenly he looked up, and their eyes met across the large space. "No," he said, as if she had asked a question.

"No?"

Despite the distance, she could see the affection in his expression. "I'll never forget you, either," he said quietly.

Sarah nodded, and gave him one last smile. Then she turned and left the TARDIS, taking her memories with her.

It definitely called for a "release the fanfic!" response, didn't it? :D I'm just glad I was able to contribute.

Aww, thanks! I think it might be the fluffiest thing I've written, but it was awfully fun.

Yes, sweet and fluffy enough to give cotton candy a run for its money. Glad you liked it!

.... oh my gosh....

What am I supposed to say to this? This is so much more than what I was expecting, *blush* I'm flattered that you made this based around my little comic strip, but with the tidbits you put in? You made it your own.

I just got the warm fuzzies all over. I love the sentimentality of Sarah's thoughts, and the description of Eleven's expression before going into the hug? EXACTLY what I was going for, I'm glad it showed through.

Forehead kiss! Yes!

"I'm not?" he responded. "That's good. Because memories are easier to lose than you might think, and I'd hate to be lost."

She thought she saw something in his expression for a moment....

Series 5 reference? Ohh, my heart. It's kind of sad because the Doctor remembers the universe where he didn't exist, so in a sense, she forgot him in that universe too (though i insist she was in a "star cult")

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the ending, perfect wrap up, cuz' out of anyone, the Doctor never, EVER forgets.

Final note? You write Eleven quite well :)

I LOVE THIS, and THANK YOU SO MUCH *hugs*

Oh, I'm so happy you like it! I was a little nervous because I did put in other stuff, and of course I had to add things like what Sarah's thinking, and what she and the Doctor say, and my ideas might not have gone with the ideas you had when you drew your wonderful pictures.

Pictures are purer than fic. Your comic tells a story, but people are free to see their own interpretations within it. I had to choose one specific interpretation so I could set it down in words.

the description of Eleven's expression before going into the hug? EXACTLY what I was going for, I'm glad it showed through.

It showed through indeed! In fact, I don't think my brief little description comes close to doing that picture justice, but I did the best I could.

Forehead kiss!

Oh, I knew from the start that she was definitely getting that forehead kiss . . . :D

Series 5 reference?

Yes, Series 5 reference! Oh, I'm so glad you got that. After I wrote it I realized that some people might think it's a Donna reference, and that's fine if they do, but as for me, I think that Sarah did forget him when he went through the crack, and so that's what he's thinking about. Good thing Sarah doesn't know she forgot, because she'd probably be devastated.

THANK YOU SO MUCH *hugs*

You are so very welcome! Although really, I should be the one thanking YOU, because there's no way I would've written this without your wonderful drawings. *hugs back*

Oh this is lovely, lovely. I'd heard you'd posted it, but I was in internet-less land for a while, so I didn't get a chance to respond before now.

I really do love the description, and it is fluffy, but not in an over-the-top kind of way. Great stuff! :)
