I wish we had Single Father over here -- I've been hearing good things about it. I don't know the other shows except for Law & Order:UK. I finally watched an episode of that, and it was interesting but didn't grab me -- which is pretty much my reaction to the parent series, too. I was amused at how much of the parent series format they kept, though, including flashing those date/place screens with that serious "da-dum" music in the background. And hey, what's up with Freema's accent in that show? She's using a different accent, right? She sounded different to me, anyway, and I actually had some trouble understanding her, possibly because my brain kept expecting her to sound like Martha.
Glad you have good television to keep you occupied! Unfortunately there are no shows that I'm excited about here except for SJA. It might be time to pull out some DVDs to tide me over.
Well that's the whole point of L&O: UK - that they kept everything the same. They're even using old scripts, but re-writing them for the UK legal system. It's not the sort of show I'd normally watch, but I started for the sake of seeing Freema in something else, and stayed for Freema, Ben (James) Daniels, Bill (George) Patterson, Bradley (Ronnie) Walsh, and Harriet (Natalie) Walter.
There's nothing wrong with Freema's accent! She's just using a slightly more formal diction, because she's playing a Crown Prosecutor, and playing Alesha nearer to her own age, instead of a few years younger like Martha.
I'm pleased as punch for Freema that the show's doing so well. They're currently filming a third set of 13 episodes, and ITV have ordered a fourth set - making the role of Alesha into Freema's longest TV role to date. She and Ben Daniels have got fantastic chemistry together - so much so that the writers are shipping them now (and this despite the fact that Ben's gay - but apparently he adores Freema 'cos she's as much of an L&O Nerd as he is! so he finds it easy to act like he fancies the pants off her! :P)
I believe Single Father's going to air in the US at some point - but no idea about anywhere else!
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that there's anything wrong with Freema's accent! I mean, of course there isn't. I just found it harder to understand what she's saying than I did when she was playing Martha. Or it could simply be that I got really used to Martha. It can take me awhile sometimes to understand a given British accent. I think the first time I heard David Tennant's real accent, I missed a good 25% of what he was saying. I'm much better at understanding him now, though!
Glad that Law & Order: UK is doing so well for Freema!
As for Single Father, it does seem like the kind of thing that will show up over here on PBS eventually. Which reminds me, Sherlock is premiering here on PBS on Sunday. I do have something else to look forward to besides SJA!
Well if you've only seen one ep of L&O:UK with Freema compared to 18 episodes of DW with Freema (not counting 3 eps of Torchwood too) then I should think you had got used to Freema's accent when playing Martha, but not yet got used to her accent when she's playing Alesha.
As for Sherlock, the first episode (written by Teh Moff) is far and away the best of the three.
