Friday rambles

Now that I've figured out the html code for posting a picture on LJ, I have to see if I can manage to get the lovely illustration that
tempestas_inu drew for me of a scene from "Miles from Aberdeen" onto the fic itself at Teaspoon. Wish me luck!
Changing the subject completely, but has anyone seen Casanova with David Tennant? I just started watching some of it, and it's a bit of a trippy experience -- like watching the Tenth Doctor pretending to be a Venetian womanizer. I've seen David in other roles and never before been reminded of the Doctor, but there are so many scenes in Casanova where he sounds exactly the same, it just keeps hitting me in the face. I suppose it's not too surprising considering that Casanova was written by RTD, and David used the same accent for both roles (or close enough to my ignorant American ears), but the result is a very surreal experience.
And that's it for the rambling. I'd love to give an update on my writing, but it's currently dead in the water again. I'm busy tomorrow, but I'm going to sit down on Sunday and see how much of a marathon session I can pull off.

Date: 2010-08-21 07:49 am (UTC)I consider it sheer laziness on the part of RTD to write both Casanova and Ten with the same accent. I still don't know why Ten couldn't have had David's natural Scottish accent - it's not like the Doctor hadn't been Scottish before!
Sympathies on the writing thing - I'm still trying to finish writing chapter 6 of my original fic - but am also writing chunks of chapter 7 - blessed plot bunny! (Herman's a wicked one!)
Inserting images to Teaspoon isn't as easy as offering a link (to, eg, Photobucket) so good luck...

I don't think it was laziness, was it? My understanding is that RTD really thought that it was preferable for the Tenth Doctor to not have a Scottish accent. Something to do with following on from Eccleston's Northern accent, and not wanting to "do a tour of the regions" (not that I understand why that would be a problem, though). It's too bad, because I adore David's real accent, and I really wish he would get to use it more often in his acting! I especially wish he'd been able to use it for "Rex is Not Your Laywer" -- did you see the clip from the pilot that got posted around not long ago? I love David's acting, but his American accent was truly horrendous. Where's Nicola Bryant when you need her?

Which is why I consider it laziness - he knew David could do that godsawful mockney accent so he didn't bother letting David either use his real accent or do a different one. And no, I don't understand why Ten being Scottish after Nine's northern should be any kind of issue. Sometimes I worry about the way in which Rusty's brain works (or rather, doesn't seem to work!)

It is appalling - even to a non-American! I don't why he couldn't have used the accent he used in 'Of Mice and Men' - most people who've heard it have said that he did a much better American accent in that than in anything else. (And yes, I wish he could've been Scottish - they could've explained it as his parents being ex-pats - plenty of ex-pats retain their accents in other countries.)

Date: 2010-08-24 12:46 am (UTC)Yep, or he could've been an ex-pat himself. We have plenty of people here from the UK.
I haven't heard his Of Mice and Men accent, but he could hardly have been worse. ; )
