No, this is not simply an excuse to use my new fez icon -- okay, well, a bit -- but I promise that I do have some rambly thoughts to share on Eleven, too!

If I were to come up with one word to describe the Eleventh Doctor, it would be "quirky." I think he's the quirkiest Doctor we've had since the Fourth Doctor, and in some ways he gives Four a run for his money. I've seen "Big Bang" an insane number of times now, and one of my absolute favorite bits is when the Doctor's holding the fez, pauses because he's not sure what to do with it, and then places it on his head. Then he goes forth with it staying on his head and proclaims to River, "I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool." I just love what that says about his character -- how he just picks something up at random and latches onto it.

I also really like the fact that we seem to have well and truly left the angst behind. Don't get me wrong; I enjoy some level of angst (just take a look at how many angsty fics I've written), but in the end I prefer optimism, and hope, and happy endings, and I was very glad that we got all of those this series.

So here's to a great first series for Eleven, and may we have many more series to come!

He did the same thing with the fez that he did with the bowtie - made a unilateral decision/declaration, based merely on the fact it was there and was something different to what he'd worn of late.

Personally I'm glad that there'll be no more Emo!Doctor nonsense. It had got old...

I agree, we were getting way too much Emo!Doctor by the end.

And, a review:
--End of second series, Ten is left alone. (Well, Donna gate-crashes, but she's really the start of a new adventure, and she's not a new companion, at least not for a long while.)
--End of third series, Ten is left alone.
--End of fourth series, Ten is left alone.

Let's face it, there was a bit of a rut going on . . .

But end of fifth series, Eleven has two awesome companions! Yay!

Poor Ten got saddled with so many adventures that didn't end well, I'm not surprised he got emo about it. Kinda wish that he had at least one thing to feel happy about before his run came to a close... By the time he "got his reward" he was already into the regenerative process.

It's sad that perhaps the Doctor got too used to being left alone, considering Eleven seemed to expect it at the end there.

As a response to the rest of your post, I'm happy for the Eleven love. Eleven's adorkable quirkiness is a big part of his charm. You're the third person I've come across who thinks Eleven's the most bonkers Doctor since Four.

I like that Eleven is growing past the angst that has plagued the Doctor, and its in a realistic way. He hasn't completely locked away the memories of the Time War and he hasn't forgotten his people (the number of references through the series made sure of that), but he's finally gotten to the stage where he's moving on and truly living again.

I'm still ridiculously Happy Amy and Rory have stayed. Here's to next season and our lovely trio (and occasional quartet) of time travelers.

Oh and, nice Fez icon ;)

Yep, RTD definitely liked the emo and the angst and the tragic side of the Doctor . . . stepping away from that fact and looking at it purely from an in-story perspective, it certainly is true that the Tenth Doctor was lonely and sad a lot of the time, and had a lot of bad stuff happen. I still love Ten, and I'm sure I always will, even though I'm also glad that Eleven is apparently going to have a happier time of it.

It's sad that perhaps the Doctor got too used to being left alone, considering Eleven seemed to expect it at the end there.

I agree, he did seem to expect to be abandoned, and that made me especially glad that he wasn't. It also reminded me how Ten had gotten so used to caring about people and getting hurt when they left, he decided that it was better to go without companions at all . . . so sad! I'm glad Eleven has gotten over that.

Ha, really? We must all be right then. ; )

After "Big Bang" I just had to go looking for a fez icon! This one was made by [profile] mars_mellow, and I really like it. :D

My favorite part of The Big Bang was the HAPPY ending. I never understood why Rusty though he always had to end the season on a tragic note. I got to suspect that he was using the writing for the show to work through personal issues - but I digress.

I first realized that Eleven was over the emo bit in the very first episode when Amelia said "all I have is an aunt" and he smiled and said "I don't even have that!" like he was happy about it. (Of course considering what he had just been through with the Time Lords, he probably was happy to get rid of them). Anyway, Ten would have used the comment to get all emo but Eleven was happy. I knew things were looking up at that point.

Yes, he is definitely as quirky as Four, but he has the mannerisms of Two, which makes me insanely happy! He even runs like him! I've wondered if that is on purpose or if it is an effect of being so bowl-legged. I also love how Matt can come across as so insanely old (even more so than David did) especially in scenes like talking to the sleeping Amelia. I cannot wait to see if he comes across as "young" or "old" when he's paired up with Jo and Sarah Jane.

Yep, he is a lot like Two. And I agree, Matt does not come across as young at all! It's strange to remember how young he really is, because the way he plays the Doctor is far older -- in the scenes between him and Alex, for example, I never seem to notice the age difference between them. I just always accept him as a 900+ Time Lord, and that's down to Matt's acting ability.

I knew I loved him from the Eleventh Hour, but the moment it set in was in The Beast Below when he puts the glass on the floor, looks at it, and then informs the bemused onlookers that he's searching for a lost fish. He's quirky and mad and, when I'm watching him, I can believe that the Doctor is an alien. It's brilliant.

(I hope you don't mind me friending you. We've been circling each others Flists for a while and seem to have similar interests. It seemed appropriate)

Yeah, he had me at Eleventh Hour, too. In fact, I think he might have had me during those first moments we saw him in End of Time. It's so nice when you love a Doctor from the beginning.

Exactly! And that's my favorite aspect of the Doctor, so I love it when that gets emphasized in a regeneration. Bring on the fezzes and fish custard! :D

Mind? I'm honored!
