Summary: The Eleventh Doctor has some questions for Sarah about aunts and orphans.
Spoilers: The Eleventh Hour
A/N: Written for [profile] 50ficlets. Prompt: Good and bad.

It was a pounding on her door, and it was 5 a.m., two things that Sarah firmly believed should never go together. At least the noise hadn't woken Luke yet. She hurried down the stairs, wondering what could be going on and if she should have grabbed K-9 from the attic. Then an unfamiliar voice called out:

"Sarah! Are you there? Is this a good time for you to be there, or am I in the wrong year? Sarah!"

She paused, momentarily too shocked to move. Then with a deep breath, she opened the door. A tall, gangly man stood there, a mad-looking stranger with wild hair and bright, wide eyes. He broke into a cheery smile as soon as he saw her. "Sarah!" he proclaimed with satisfaction, as if he had just conjured her out of a hat. "So this is a good year to find you here after all."

"Doctor?" she asked to be sure, although she already knew. Who else would ask if he was in the correct year, and who else would grin at her like this? Besides, while he appeared young, younger even than the last version of him she had met, there was an air about him that gave away the passage of centuries. "Are you all right?" she asked as he continued to stand on her doorstep, uncharacteristically still. "What are you doing here?"

"Regenerating," he answered. A wisp of golden energy escaped his mouth, then he smiled again.

"Okay," she said, half-worried, half-bemused. "I suppose you'd better come in, then."

"Oh no," he responded, "I’m not here to visit. I'm only here to ask you a question." He paused, as if he had forgotten his train of thought, then, "Aunts!" he proclaimed suddenly, and she took a startled step backwards. "I need to know more about aunts. You have an aunt, right?"

"I have an ant?" she asked. "I don't have any ants that I’m aware of. What sort of ants did you have in mind?"

"The human sort," he replied. "You have no aunt? I thought you had an Aunt Lavinia."

"Ah," said Sarah. "Yes, I did. What do you want to know about her?"

The Doctor swayed a little on his feet, then steadied. "She raised you, correct? Because you have no parents?"

"Yes," Sarah answered. She took a deep breath and reminded herself that he was regenerating, so it wasn't his fault that he was being tactless. Then she remembered that he was often tactless even when he wasn't regenerating, but reminded herself that he was her friend anyway. "I was orphaned as a baby, and my Aunt Lavinia raised me. Is there anything else you want to know?"

The Doctor leaned forward and peered at her. "What was that like -- being orphaned?"

Sarah reminded herself about the tact again, but gave him a pointed look anyway. "Difficult," she replied.

He didn't seem to notice. "Four more questions, then. Did your aunt leave you on your own when you were a child? Did she ignore you when you spoke about terrifying cracks in your wall? Would she have noticed if you'd suddenly disappeared one night? And would she have missed you after you left?" He held up a finger for each question, counting them off.

Sarah sighed. "Yes, no -- but I had no cracks in my wall, or no terrifying ones -- yes, and I certainly hope so. Doctor, what is this about?"

"I just thought I should check," he answered vaguely. "One more question. Just the one," and he held up a single finger. He stared at it for a moment, then dropped it and looked straight at her. "If I had met you when you were a child, and you had then traveled with me, would you have regretted it later?"

She stared at him, trying to understand where these questions were coming from. "If I had traveled with you when? As a child, or later on, after I grew up?"

"Both. Neither. No, both," he said, and then he grabbed her hands, his gaze intense as if the fate of the universe depended upon her answer. Perhaps it did. "Would you have regretted coming with me?"

"Don't you know?" she asked. He shook his head slightly, his eyes still searching hers. "No," she said. "Of course not. Even as a child, I wouldn't have. No matter what monsters I faced, or what evil I saw, I would have gone with you and never regretted a moment of it. I could never regret that, ever," she added softly.

His sudden smile was as bright as daybreak. "Good," he said. "That's very good."

"It is," she agreed. "But even so, taking a child with you would be bad. You know that, right, Doctor? Skip ahead to when your orphan friend grows up, and everyone will be happier. Especially her aunt."

"Sarah Jane," said the Doctor in an affronted tone, "do you really think I would consider stealing a child away?"

"Of course you would, Doctor," she replied, "but don't do it."

"It would be bad?"

"Yes, it would be bad."

He sighed. "Okay. I was hoping you wouldn't say that, but I suppose you're right."

"Of course I'm right. I'm always right," she teased. Then she drew him to her, and gave him a large hug. "This is what I wanted to do to you the last time I saw you."

"When I was dying, you mean? That wasn't very long ago, for me." From his tone he might have been commenting on the weather.

"I know," she replied. "I'm sorry."

"It was a bad day," he said simply. "Today is looking better, though." He tightened his arms around her to hug her back.

"I'm glad," she told him. "Thank you for saving Luke."

"You are so very welcome, Sarah." For a full minute they hugged each other, then with a final squeeze, he released her.

She stepped back to once more take in his new appearance. The vitality of regeneration still seeped from him, and whoever this orphan child was, Sarah envied her for the adventure she would soon have. "Take care of yourself, okay? And if you can, come visit me again someday?"

He smiled. "Until the next time, then." He took her hand and kissed it as an old-fashioned gentleman would, then he quickly turned and strode away, not looking back.

She watched him disappear into the shadows, feeling happy, and a little bit sad, too. When he was fully gone, she went back inside to make herself a cup of tea. After all, the sun would be rising soon, and the new day was already here.

Aw... The Doctor can be so very tactless - but at least he's being thoughtful enough to consult Sarah before he nicks off with wee!Amelia...

Of course, little does he know that he's not about to have a choice about taking wee!Amelia, since he's about to arrive 12 years later instead of 5 minutes later . . . :D

Oh, you mean you're NOT suggesting it was a deliberate choice on 11's part then? Because I thought that was what this fic was implying, that 11 deliberately didn't get back 5 mins later on Sarah's advice...

No, in my head it wasn't a deliberate choice -- he still meant to come back 5 minutes later, especially after he realizes that Prisoner Zero is hiding in her house and she's therefore in danger. He just wouldn't have agreed to take little Amelia with him, that's all.

Oh, tha was great. (I was also amused you went over because this is the very same prompt I was saying I had to cut back by about 400 words - and want to make longer anyway... Heh.)

That's great - and you've got Eleven down right, already, there. :-)

It must be the evil prompt of going-over-the-word-limit evil! When you posted on [profile] 50ficlets, my first thought was "Hey, that's the prompt I'm working on right now!" And then you posted in your journal about being over the word limit, and I'm looking at my fic, and while I never know for sure what I'll do in the final editing stages, it was certainly looking like it would be over . . . which of course it then was. So really all of my encouragement to go ahead and post anyway had ulterior motive behind it -- now you know! :D

Glad to hear that Eleven seemed like Eleven, though, since first time writing him and all that . . .

Yes, now I know, you evil person, you! It's funny to think we were working on the same prompt at pretty much the same time. :-)

Ethical dilemmas are hard to present and solve in 1000 words or less, shall we agree?

And, yes, you really did get Eleven down - I'm impressed. Last week was the first time I began to think I could probably start to attempt him if I so wished - and you haven't even got that far into S5 yet.

I was a little nervous about trying to write him already, but I figured that by setting the fic during "Eleventh Hour," anything I got wrong could be passed off as regeneration sickness. :) I also just really felt like giving it a shot, which is usually a good indicator that my muse has gotten a handle on a character.

I love Eleven coming to Sarah to ask advice about aunts and being all tactless. I especially like this line:

She took a deep breath and reminded herself that he was regenerating, so it wasn't his fault that he was being tactless. Then she remembered that he was often tactless even when he wasn't regenerating, but reminded herself that he was her friend anyway.

I really love little Amelia Pond. Sometimes, I wonder if I would enjoy her more with the Doctor than adult Amy Pond.

Poor Sarah. *shakes head* He really likes to show up at the most inopportune times, doesn't he?

Little Amelia was a wonderful character -- I would love to see her show up again. I agree, it would be interesting to see the Doctor travel with a child, and with that child in particular (even though in the fic, Sarah is advising him against it!)

He really likes to show up at the most inopportune times, doesn't he?

He does indeed.

I keep finding Sarah/Eleven fic everywhere.

Do you know how HAPPY this makes me.

Thank you so much. I love The Doctor coming to Sarah to get her opinion. It does feel right, considering Amy and Sarah's similar backgrounds.

Wonderful job!

I keep finding Sarah/Eleven fic everywhere.

I've seen hardly any, although since I'm two weeks behind most people (watching in the U.S.), I've been staying away from places where I am likely to run into spoilers. I'll have to go looking for those stories now!

I'm glad you're happy to see another Sarah/Eleven fic :D, and yes, I did particularly enjoy writing about the parallels between Sarah and Amy.

Well...I "supposedly" two weeks behind as well. Except I have a fast interweb connection, and I just couldn't wait. :D :D :D

I just read another one today...by [livejournal.com profile] sleepismyfriend. Not to spoilery, so you should go and read.

http://sleepismyfriend.livejournal.com/162020.html

Also saw one on Teaspoon. I think all the talk about the upcoming SJA and a certain someone visiting is stirring up the creative juices.

Pretty much any Doctor/Sarah fic makes me smile. Don't care the Doctor (though I do love me some Four) but those two...they are soul mates. Screw River Song, Sarah is where it's at!!

As it happens, I've already read [personal profile] sleepismyfriend's story, but thanks for the link anyway and I agree it's a good one (and I think it was also very recently posted, so we were very coincidental in our timing -- there must be Eleven/Sarah in the air!) I don't think I know the Teaspoon one you're referring to, but that's not too surprising since I've been staying away from Eleven fic on Teaspoon.

Pretty much any Doctor/Sarah fic makes me smile.

I'm pretty easy to please that way, too! :D

Hmmm...Eleven/Sarah in the air. Sounds like a fic (or perhaps a Love Song.) I'm so looking forward to the Eleven/Sarah Icons. Might have to pony up and get some more icons. :D

The one on Teaspoon was called The Second Reward. It's a multi-companion fic, but there is a really sweet moment between Sarah and Eleven. Not to spoilery.

Oh I do so love the Doctor when he forgets to even try and be tactful! And I love that you're exploring the fact that Amy is so like Sarah Jane...

But more than that I love her reaction to him, and I so hope that when Sarah sees Eleven for the first time it's this subtle and perfect. In the space of a heartbeat she knows him, accepts him, and moves on.

Oh, this was so sweet and lovely.

You captured Sarah Jane so perfectly, as just that great friend to the Doctor; her recognising the Doctor, and her bemusement, then envying (sp?) Amy and telling the Doctor to visit, and especially this line: Then she remembered that he was often tactless even when he wasn't regenerating, but reminded herself that he was her friend anyway.

And I loved your Doctor, too. This line, "It was a bad day," he said simply. "Today is looking better, though."

This conversation was just so perfect for the two of them, it had to have happened. :)

Oh, that was excellent! Left me grinning like an idiot. I'm so glad I found this. Considering the newness of series 5, finding stories involving Eleven and Sarah Jane are very rare gems. This one wins points for being able to easily stick into canon without changing much of anything other than Sarah Jane already seeing him in his new form. Speaking of which I liked that it "felt" like it occurred in "Eleventh Hour". By that I mean it's in a very similar tone.... so much so I almost expected him to ram into another tree when walking away from Sarah Jane's house XD (though that would probably scare Sarah badly).

Consulting Sarah on this subject certainly seems like something he'd do.... God, I was giggling so hard though at how he was trying to get her attention.... subtle he was not, had he arrived at a "wrong year" things would've probably gone very, VERY bad. Thankfully, in Sarah's own words, he's her friend, and she holds him dear enough that she's willing excuse his crazy behavior. I'm surprised that Sarah didn't make a comment about his "assistants" getting younger (to the EXTREME) when she realized that he was thinking about taking a young child with him, though.

You seem to write the Doctor's new quirks very well; the off-kilter, almost manic upbeat-ness, the inappropriately nonchalant manner when referring to certain subjects.... all of it seems very "Eleven" to me. Describing him as "mad-looking" is so right. Oh, and the moment with him still expelling excess energy fittingly echoes his "I'm still cooking" statement to Amy earlier. Again, really works well alongside the actual episode. Thought that was nice.

And of course, you can't go wrong with a Doctor/Sarah hug, nice way to bring a bit of closure to the rather depressing goodbye they had last.

Loved it, keep writing! Sorry about my comments going all over the place!

What wonderful comments, thank you! : )

I do like to stick to canon usually, so it's actually a departure for me to write something that I already know is doomed to be jossed, but in this case I couldn't resist. I did try to keep it to as-little-AU-as-possible, though. : )

Really glad that this "felt" like "Eleventh Hour" to you, and that you like the way I wrote Eleven. And yes, the Doctor is definitely not subtle! : )

And of course, you can't go wrong with a Doctor/Sarah hug

No, you never can! And forget "End of Time"; I'm still owed a Doctor/Sarah hug from "The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith"! There was no way I was going to let this story end without them hugging. :D

*shrug* It's not like it goes completely into the out o bounds range. It still works very well :D

And yes, we are overdue for a Doctor/Sarah hug. Hopefully we'll get another one soon.... though I personally rationalized that the "don't forget me" callback in the wedding episode kinda sorta made up for/took the place of a hug.

Well, I adored the "don't forget me" callback so much, I had to write fic around it (as you know -- thank you again for that review; it means so much to know that you remember the story and cared enough about it to comment on it when you found it here).

But even so, I still wanted that hug! ; )
