unexpected Harry!!!!!!
Jan. 26th, 2010 11:30 pmHad a hard day today and was just randomly playing on Netflix to see what Doctor Who episodes they had available for instant streaming when I clicked on "Carnival of Monsters," a Third Doctor episode which I'd never seen before. So picture me innocently watching, idly wondering if this one's any good and then OMG IT'S HARRY SULLIVAN!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, actually Ian Marter but OMG IT'S IAN MARTER!!!!!!!!!! Playing *another* naval officer! Did the guy get typecast in Doctor Who, or what?
So now I'm obviously going to have to watch the rest of this ASAP. "Delta and the Bannermen" is due to show up tomorrow in the mail, and I've never seen it either, and I was looking forward to my first time seeing Seven and Mel together, but now that one's just going to have to wait. Because did I mention Ian Marter? In fact, if I'm not careful, I'm going to be dragging out my "Terror of the Zygons" videotape next, I just know it . . .

Date: 2010-01-27 08:04 am (UTC)I confess to a certain amount of glee, also, in the fact that three of my favourite companions are played by actors who had previously had a smaller role in the show (ie Harry, Romana II and Martha).

Date: 2010-01-27 08:20 am (UTC)Oh, I know! I sometimes feel that I must not be a hard-core Doctor Who fan because I don't know all these geeky details, but I'm kind of glad that I don't because it's so fun to get surprised!

That is glee-inducing! Although I have to point out that both Lalla and Freema got to reference their prior appearances, but Ian didn't -- why couldn't we get a line like "did you have a relative who served on a boat in the Indian ocean in 1926?" Although I suppose having a line like that would have been confusing to people who hadn't seen that particular earlier episode . . . like, er, me, for example.

Exactly! That would've been pretty confusing. With Lalla, it was only the story before, so it would've been weird *not* to have referenced it. As for Freema, I think the fact that RTD decided Adeola was Martha's identical cousin was actually the silliest answer to the question of why Martha looks so familiar.

With Freema, they could have gotten away with no reference I think, but it's nice they put something in, and actually the way they played it works if you recognize her and also if you don't (as opposed to having the Doctor go "wait a minute, weren't you brain-fried by the Cybermen?") Although a twin sister would've made more sense than an identical cousin, IMO.

Date: 2010-01-27 03:41 pm (UTC)Carnival of Monsters is one of my faves for half of it (the Doctor half), I tend to fast-forward over the blah-blah-blah subplot of the boring grey bald guys. The Drashigs and Jo's resignation over the repetition of the cycle on the ship are such fun.

Date: 2010-01-27 05:03 pm (UTC)Barbara's in "Meglos"? I think I vaguely remember hearing that somewhere -- is she the priestess woman? Might be interesting to re-watch that now that I've finally seen Barbara in an episode . . . but it will be strange because I know "Meglos" pretty well.
Yeah, the boring grey bald guys are already very boring and I've only finished part 1, but good to know the Doctor half stays good!
