So BBC America has started advertising "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency," and based on the ad, it looks terrible. I'm guessing that it's been shown in the UK already, so if you've seen it, is it any good?

I am a huge Douglas Adams fan, and I've read the books, so in my opinion, a good adaptation would have the same sense of humor as the books. The ad looks like it's for an actual detective show of some sort -- it's emphasizing corpses and cops, ugh.

EDIT: It turns out this is a brand new TV show, not a rebroadcast of the series that appeared in the UK. Whole new opportunity for it to be as terrible as the ad is promising!

I think maybe it was on Sky over here? (Which is to say, not one of the freeview channels, so less people see it). You'll have to watch it and tell us if it's terrible. ;-p

That's amusing that BBC America is showing programs from its rivals over in the UK.

Not sure if I want to be the guinea pig who has to watch it, though! But I probably will just out of morbid curiosity.

Apparently they do it a lot. I think it's a ploy just to keep people in the US believing that they make all our TV, so they steal Downton Abbey and things. *nods*

But somebody's got to do it!

Actually, Downton Abbey was grabbed by PBS (public broadcasting), which put on Doctor Who back in the '70s. It was nice to watch it without commercials!

Another thing that amuses me about BBC America is they keep broadcasting Star Trek: Next Generation, which is of course a very American show. At least it has Patrick Stewart in it? ;)

lol, one of the few times you got one of our shows without commercials while we had to put up with them, then! :-) (And, sorry, I was sure someone had told me Downton was on BBC America. It must have been some other ITV show.)

Just found out that this is a brand-new show, not the one that was broadcast in the UK. It's being co-produced by BBC America, and it's premiering in October. That means it really might be as terrible as the ad is promising!

I've heard from friends that it has very little to do with the source material. They compared it to the new Star Trek franchise (which they don't like because it guts the original).

Rats, that's what I was afraid of. Certainly the ad seems to have very little connection with the source material.
