dbskyler: (no on prop 8)

So today the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Prop 8, the law that bans same-sex marriage in California. We won't hear the Court's decision for awhile -- somewhere or other I heard "June" mentioned -- but hopefully we are near the moment when Prop 8 will get overturned. And tomorrow, the Supreme Court hears arguments on the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which currently enshrines federal discrimination against gays and lesbians who are legally married in their states. Hopefully that will get tossed, too.

In the meantime, a lot of people are hanging out on the Supreme Court steps with posters. Of all the pictures I've seen, this is my favorite:

That is indeed a brilliant poster!

I also loved one that said "Jesus had two fathers and he turned out fine" or something like that :D

(I was even more amused to read the way the judges pretty much ripped apart some of the 'marriage is for procreation!!!!!' arguments).

LOL yes, except I don't feel qualified to comment on that one since I'm Jewish. In fact, I'm not sure who the two fathers are. Are they God and the Holy Ghost? Or is the Holy Ghost Jesus after he died? I've never understood that.

The "marriage is for procreation" argument is both ridiculous on the face of it and offensive to the many people who don't want, or can't have, children, but still want to be married. It was very rightly ripped apart!

I presume the two fathers in the joke must Joseph and God?

The Holy Spirit is, btw, only the same thing as the Spirit of God in the Old Testament. We just have extra theology (the Trinity) that is not comprehensible to anyone, so it's been something to argue about for 2000 years. Well, yet another thing to argue over... :-/
