Sarah Jane Smith fanworks rec post

I'm finally feeling ready to post a rec list of my favorite fanfics, artwork, and fanvids featuring Sarah Jane Smith. Despite the length of this post, I'm fairly certain I've left something out, or more likely several somethings, and so I fully expect someone to go, "What about x?" at which point I will probably say, "OMG, I love x, how could I have forgotten about x?"

But at least I can say that all of these fanworks are favorites of mine, for one reason or another, and I hope it's useful to have them gathered in one place.

You might care to look at my latest LJ post, if you can find the time, since it's got a bit about a Big Finish tribue podcast to Lis (and Nick C) in it.

Oh rats, I was afraid I would offend someone. Really, these are just the fics I go back to often enough to recall off the top of my head; they're not meant to be a definitive list (not even *my* definitive list, and of course just because something's not my favorite doesn't mean it's not excellent -- and vice versa).

But now I'm having trouble even thinking of what fics of yours I may have overlooked. I only included fics that centered on Sarah (in my probably biased opinion); just having her as a character, even as a main character, wasn't enough for inclusion. For example, I didn't include MinervaFan's Brig tribute "A Final Toast" because I thought it was too evenly matched between Sarah, Liz and Jo.

But if you have fics -- yours or someone else's -- that you want to add to the recommendations, feel free to direct people to them in a comment.

By the way, I'm mulling over the idea of proposing a recs post for sarahjane_fic -- a place where everyone can throw in their favorites. Does that sound interesting to you? I already know about all of *these* stories / artworks / fanvids; it'd be nice to hear about some I don't know about!

I did see it. I'm really impressed that you're on idea-pitching terms with Nick Briggs, and I'm glad that he's going to do it!

Do you know what the timeline is for sending in ideas?

Oh. I wasn't sure since you hadn't commented. I tend to use comments as an indicator of whether or not someone's read a post.

There's no deadline, as such, but I'd think the sooner you can send in your favourite moments, the better otherwise you might miss out on getting yours included. I can't imagine they'll want to leave it too long before they do the podcast, otherwise it'll be a little pointless.

I hadn't commented yet because I wasn't sure what to say. I've never heard a Big Finish podcast, so I'm pretty clueless about what they're like. Also, none of my favorite Sarah moments would be from Big Finish, since my exposure to BF is still pretty limited. I'm not sure what to send in. Actually, I feel awkward sending in anything since I'm not a Big Finish regular.

Have I got so rubbish at communication that it's *not* clear that they're interested in memories of TV stories OR audios, or just memories about Nick or Lis? *I* thought that was clear. But apparently not.

So let me reiterate - you don't have to be a Big Finish fan to join in, you don't have to mention a fave BF audio featuring Nick and/or Lis, you just have to share a fave moment (or more) featuring one or other of them. If you want to list details of clips from audios, you can - but if it's TV stories, just describe the scene.

Meanwhile I shall go away and learn how to write more simply and clearly since apparently I'm failing at it in a major way at present.

No, I understood that it was okay to mention television scenes and memories of Nick or Lis; I just feel awkward about making requests for a Big Finish podcast when I'm not a Big Finish regular. I'll probably get over it, though.

Personally I don't see what difference it makes whether you're a BF regular purchaser or not - you loved Lis and Nick, therefore your contribution is as valid as anyone else's.

But then again, I'm *not* you, so that makes my PoV invalid.

Noting your suggestion about sarahjane_fic - I think a recs post, like this, that everyone could add to in the comments would be a great idea. (I would suggest if you're going to post this here that if you can manage it, having the rating, characters/ships, storylength & at least the author's summary if there is one really helps. I know it makes it take even longer to do, but not as much as doing a write-up. I don't ask for much, do i? :-D But it would set the pattern for everyone else in the comments, too, if you see what I mean & that can only be a good thing.)

Oh, I agree, there should definitely be all that information about each rec if it's going to be on a comm. I thought about it for this post, but to be honest, it was such a pain just getting all the links together, I decided not to bother beyond categorizing the fic and giving a warning for the one adult-rated fic.

If I start off a recs post on sarahjane_fic, I may just "seed" it with a few of these instead of posting the full list, because I think posting just a few recs is more likely to get others to start weighing in than posting a large number of recs. I'm sure most of these stories will be recced by other people too, and if any get left out, I can always add them.
