Fanvid: Story in Your Eyes (Doctor/Sarah)

Fanvid is finished! I decided to start out by posting it at Vimeo:
Title: Story in Your Eyes (Doctor/Sarah)
Characters: The Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith
Clips from: Doctor Who, Sarah Jane Adventures
Music: "Story in Your Eyes" performed by The Moody Blues
Link to video: http://www.vimeo.com/22349177
Password: story
By the way, I realized something last night. My very first Doctor Who fanfic -- "Miles from Aberdeen" -- was about Sarah letting go of the Doctor. This fanvid -- my first -- is about the Doctor letting go of Sarah. Someone could probably psychoanalyze me for their dissertation, couldn't they? Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

(That is me smiling widely a lot here.) That was brilliant!!! The Classic Who clips look an awful lot better in this than they do in a lot of people's vids - did you do something, or is it just being legal paying off? Anyway, I love the song, the mood of it, the clips. Wow. It was fun to hear about the progress - and then finally get to watch the result, and it sounded like it'd be a cool vid - and it was. Well done!!!

Well, if I did something clever to enhance the video quality, it wasn't on purpose, and I probably couldn't replicate it. *g* But I suspect that it's simply because all the clips are straight off my DVDs. It stands to reason that if you're collecting clips from various sources, those sources might be of variable quality. However, I do think I probably should've de-interlaced "Pyramids of Mars" and "Hand of Fear" after all to improve the quality of those clips. Oh well, next time.

Date: 2011-04-15 04:40 pm (UTC)I've found it on YT now as well and favourited it in my bookmarks. And, lol, now you can be all smug and virtuous about how crime never pays, or something...
Now, didn't we have a conversation about this in which if you learnt, I was going to request a fanvid off you? ;-D (LOL. Do not fear. I'll have to learn, too, won't i?)

I remember that. Didn't you want Five/Tegan? I'd be happy to do that for you as soon as you purchase all the DVDs and mail them over to me to keep forever. ; )
(But honestly? If I can do it, you can do it! Especially since you're already better at graphics than I am.)

Date: 2011-04-16 09:14 am (UTC)I wouldn't mind having a go at a fanvid - I once made something similar for media studies using many moons ago an editing suite and video and cassettes and that was fun. It took ages, though. Days and days. However, I would need to download software and rip stuff onto my pc and put it together, and while I have done a slide-show thing (it didn't really work out, but I mean to have another try sometime), I think my pc would die. It copes well with most things, but it groans a bit sometimes when I screencap and make icons. I dread to think what it would do if I tried to play about with moving pictures on it...
Edit: Also you mentioned the slowness of ripping and leaving your pc on all night to do it. It was at that point, I realised I could never make a fanvid. I switch off all the lights, and the Tv, and EVERYTHING obsessively. Plus, my pc is in my room.

Date: 2011-04-19 06:50 am (UTC)And so would I, so who knows, I suppose? Also it is one it would be hard to explain, because this is the song I have in mind (by Aimee Mann):
Nothing was saving our day
There was nothing to say,
But you said something anyway
Claiming I stepped out of line
Which forced you to leave me,
As if that idea was mine.
[Chorus]
Oh, you stupid thing
Speaking of course as your dear departed
Oh, you stupid thing
It wasn't me that you outsmarted,
You stupid thing
Stopping it all before it even started
I bet you knew it would come
That's just like you, to sit back
And just play it dumb
One word of warning would help
But that sacrifice was made
Trying to save yourself
[Chorus]
Maybe that's just how I am
To fall where I stand,
Or I'm weak for that kind of man
One who looks helpless and brave
But you turned into a coward
I don't care for the parts you saved.
[Chorus]
Which sounds as if I'm being really mean to Five, but I'm just kind of thinking of Resurrection and stuff... So, yeah. Except there is the technical side, not killing my pc and the fact that I want to do family history and writing and... :-)
Your example is very inspiring, tho'!

Date: 2011-04-13 07:54 pm (UTC)I was blocking the frame. Silly me. That was very VERY well done. It didn't seem like a retreading at all and you put the clips together in some very unique ways. I like it loads! And as others are saying above, the Classic Who is very very clear and shiny compared to a lot of vids.

Date: 2011-04-13 08:02 pm (UTC)Really glad to hear that you like it! I'm also very glad to hear that it didn't seem like a retread of everyone else's Doctor/Sarah fanvid. (Although I've probably watched more of those than you have. *g*)

Date: 2011-04-15 12:05 am (UTC)And that song is one of my all-time favorites. Although my saying that is practically admitting to being middle-aged. I'm sure there are lots of young people who've never heard of the Moody Blues.
I'm very sensitive to music in fanvids. Someone can make an excellent fanvid, but if I don't care for the music, I can't watch it.

Date: 2011-04-15 09:29 am (UTC)...See, you can also claim to have been born in the 80s. And have an... old fashioned taste in music :D
And that's very true. I mean, unless you hit 'mute', you're stuck with the song. And it does alter your perception of the vid as a whole, I think, if you really can't stand the music.

Date: 2011-04-15 03:51 pm (UTC)You don't have old-fashioned taste -- you have excellent taste! :D
When I was talking to prospective vidders during the help_haiti auction about whether they could make this fanvid, some of them had never heard of the group or the song. So I got a little self-conscious about it. But you're right, loving a song has nothing to do with its age. After all, "Story in Your Eyes" came out in 1971, when I was too young to be paying attention to music on the radio.
(In fact, I was minus 10! Because I was born in the 80s! *g*)
But some of my favorite songs really did come out before I was born. Good music is ageless. :D

Date: 2011-04-19 05:52 am (UTC)The truth is, this fanvid is pretty much exactly how I see the Doctor/Sarah relationship. They're in love with each other, but they're never going to get together. "Story in Your Eyes" is practically their theme song in my head, which is why I've wanted this fanvid for so long.
The scene that was too short for the lyric was the bit from "Planet of Evil" where the Doctor is staring into Sarah's eyes: " . . . is the music to the story in your eyes." When you watch that scene, they seem to connect with each other for a long moment, but in reality, there's almost no time before Sarah breaks contact and looks down. But the slow-motion thing sounded very complicated to implement, and I decided that the scene worked reasonably well as it stood. The running scene in "School Reunion" is also slightly too short, and that would've been a nice one to slow up, too, if I knew how to do it. I'm glad it all looks like it fits, though!
