dbskyler: (Four and Sarah looking)

I love fanvids, but I absolutely cannot make them. Not even a little bit. I can't even figure out how to make a clip of something, let alone put a whole bunch of clips together to music. But I do love them, and there's one particular fanvid I've wanted to see made for a long time now: the Doctor and Sarah, and the Moody Blues song "Story in Your Eyes."

When the [community profile] help_haiti auction came along last year, I was really excited, because it was a cause that I really wanted to help, and it was a chance to win an auction for someone to make me this fanvid. Well, I found someone who was offering Doctor Who fanvids, asked them if they would be willing to make this specific one, and got their answer that yes, they were willing. I then bid and won the auction, paid the money to the charity . . . and nothing's happened since. I've emailed the vidder several times, but there's been no response. Given that it's now been a year since the auction, I'm not exactly expecting one.

I don't regret donating the money to the charity. But, I would still really, really like to see this fanvid get made. I also don't think I will ever acquire the skills to be able to make it myself. So, does anyone have any suggestions for ways to go about persuading vidders to make a particular fanvid? Having been burned once, I don't want to go for a charity auction again (although I do recognize that some people do follow through on their offers). I've thought about offering fanfic for a fanvid, but I don't even know where to make such an offer. Any ideas? Does anyone know of any communities where people can request fanvids, or offer things such as fanfic in exchange? Or should I just give up on the idea altogether?

What about posting the request on the sarahjane_fic comm - after all, they're all Sarah fans so they're more likely to be amenable...

I don't think you need to offer fic in return unless you really want to - just ask if anyone's willing to make the vid.

I did think about posting there -- some great vidders are members -- but I was worried about it being inappropriate since it's not a comm where people generally make requests for things. I don't know, maybe it doesn't hurt to ask?

Well you could always ask the mod if it's okay?

Makes more sense than posting the request with a "Mods, if this isn't allowed, please delete" comment (which thing drives me utterly bonkers when I see it in comms. I want to comment saying "Why not ask the mod beforehand, instead of being so damned lazy?!").

Ha, I had a similar experience with a charity auction. The person was supposed to make me a DW scarf 3+ years ago. I told her it didn't even need to be anywhere near full length. No scarf for me, but she later volunteered for another auction (and claimed she was still working on my scarf). I've long since given up on getting it and am finally learning to knit so I can make my own.

I hope you can find someone to make your fanvid. An exchange comm for this sort of thing would be nice.

Sorry you had a similar experience. I can't believe she actually volunteered for another auction without fulfilling her obligation to you. I hope she wasn't promising another scarf!

An exchange comm for this kind of thing would be nice. It would also be nice if there were an "unfulfilled auction promises" comm.

can't believe they didn't make you your vid. who would do that?

i don't have anything helpful to say, really. what about [livejournal.com profile] dwpromptmeme? it does say 'some sort of fanwork' on the userpage...

Yes, it's pretty annoying and frustrating, especially since I went to the trouble of confirming with her that she would be able to fulfill this specific request if I were to win the auction. I suspect that she over-promised, and discovered that she wasn't able to fulfill the request after all, then was too chicken to contact me and ask for a substitute request. I suppose that the other possibility is she just flaked out completely, but I like to think that she at least tried, a little bit.

Thanks for the [profile] dwpromptmeme suggestion. I'll take a look.

I thought I saw a dw fanvids comm around the other day, but now I can't, so maybe I dreamt it.

If you find a place, let me know. I can't make fanvids either and have some I would love to see, too. :-)

I found it! [profile] dwfanvids, and it's an active comm! Plus, the user info states that it's okay to make fanvid requests! Although no one seems to be actually making requests -- it's post after post of "here's my fanvid" -- but maybe that just means that requests are overdue? ; )

Yes, let's go on there and beg! I would like, well, lots more Classic Who fanvids, generally, but particularly I would love Five/Tegan to 'Stupid Thing' by Aimee Mann (but it would be better for many reasons to wait until Frontios becomes available!).

And, yay, I wasn't dreaming!

That's utterly rubbish!

I like the charity auctions quite a bit and haven't been burned yet, but ack! Don't post that you can do something if you can't. And if you find you can't then TELL the person so that they can information auction pinch hitters and... gaaahhh.

And I sympathize entirely on the vidding. My vidding skills are pretty limited (and all I've got to work with is WMM so that makes it even more fun). And then there's the clip problem (I have no clue how to go about getting the clips from my DVDs to the computer) but I've got so many ideas on vids... it's very frustrating.

I've been wanting to make an Eleven vid to Dynamo of Volition by Jason Mraz since the series ended.

This was my first experience with charity auctions, and I'm sorry to say that I'm unlikely to bid in one again.

Looking back, there were a couple of red flags in this case, though. Although the vidder offered Doctor Who as one of her "I will vid this" fandoms, it wasn't her main fandom. Then when I contacted her, she confessed to me that she wasn't really familiar with Classic Who, so would have to do some research to get Four/Sarah scenes. But she did know SJA -- she asked if she could use SJA scenes, and I said yes, absolutely -- and she said she could make me the vid, and I believed her.

I really, really wish I had vidding skills!
