dbskyler: (fezzes are cool)

Hi! *waves* I've been around, but I went through a period where I didn't really feel like posting. Anyway, here's what's been going on:

Being in [community profile] fandom_stocking was an interesting experience. I unfortunately didn't do very well in the stocking-stuffing department, so apologies to everyone! I did get some great gifts myself, though, including gifts from people whom I don't normally interact with online. That was pretty awesome. My great swag included a Four and Sarah icon (how did they know? *g*), an Eleventh Doctor fez!fic (which was awesome -- the world needs more fez!fic), a Four and Sarah missing scene ficlet (which I keep re-reading because it's wonderful Four and Sarah and therefore makes me extremely happy :D), an incredibly perfect SJA ficlet starring Gita (which is exactly what I would've wished for if I had done Yuletide, and here I got it just as a random gift!), and a very fun romp!fic with (wait for it) Four, Six, Ten, Sarah, Harry, Evelyn and Martha! (part 1 here and part 2 here.)

I managed to write exactly one ficlet for [community profile] fandom_stocking: a G-rated TNG ficlet (my very first shot at writing that fandom) with Picard, Riker, Data and Q, which is here if anyone is interested. There's a fandom_stocking collection at Archive of Our Own, and I keep thinking aboutf posting this there, but I would then have to come up with a title and a summary, and I have no ideas for either.

In other news, I recently saw the first two-part episode of the American version of "Being Human." It's sort of surreal, because I think I would normally really like the show, but instead of sitting back and enjoying it, I keep comparing it to the original version, usually unfavorably. It's not even that the show is worse, necessarily; it bothers me just because it's different. For example, the actors all have American accents, and that seems wrong. The actors look different (because they're, you know, different actors), and I don't like that either. Then the characters' names are different, and that keeps throwing me because someone will say "Josh" and I don't know who that is until I translate it as "George" in my head and go "oh." The storyline is also different, which is probably a good thing, actually. Anyway, I think I'll keep watching for now and see what happens.

Finally, there's another WIP challenge starting up in February at the DreamWidth comm writethisfanfic, and I'm trying to decide if I should do it or not. Last time was a huge failure, and January has been a completely unproductive writing month, which means that doing the February challenge is likely to be either a really good thing or a horrendously bad one, but I can't predict which it will be.

I think I'm a bad audience for remakes, because I always compare. I have the same problem when I watch movies that were originally books. You would've hated sitting next to me during "Lord of the Rings" -- I kept squirming, and muttering "That's different, that's very different, and what the hell have they done to [fill in the blank]?"

The American Being Human does seem to be trying to take the basic premise and start fresh from there -- hence the different character names and different plotline already. (George -- excuse me, Josh -- has a sister now.) So I might be able to accept it as a new show. It's harder though because UK Being Human is so recent, and of course still ongoing. At least with the remake of Battlestar Galactica, it had been a couple of decades.

Good point about the WIP challenge. It's not as if there are any dire consequences to failing the challenge. Maybe I should give it a shot.

Oh, we ALL went through that stage with LOTR! Especially with the elves, I think. I still protest about the elves. There are NO elves in Helm's Deep, grrr!

Well, we could decide of dire consequences in case you fail the challenge, but I'm getting the feeling it might be counter-productive... ;)

I still remember getting quite irate at Frodo being somewhere he wasn't supposed to be, but as I haven't seen LOTR since, I don't quite remember where they put him.

Speaking of which, apparently they're bringing back Frodo for the movie they're making of "The Hobbit." As Frodo was not only not in that book, but not even born yet, I'm not quite sure how they're going to pull that one off.

It would work to keep me from doing the challenge, if that's what you're after! ;D

OMG I've heard of that! I think they said something about a flashback/forward/something, so he's not going to be transplanted into the Hobbit plot... I think... hope????

Wellllll, y'know, if you ever finish Turn Again, the world might end, or it might come out of the computer to life or something, so there is an argument in preventing you from writing it.... :D

If they use Frodo as the narrator, reading aloud "There and Back Again" or something, that would be all right. I really hope they don't try to transplant him into the plot. Actually, I also heard that Galadriel's going to be in it, and I guess they are going to transplant her into the plot somehow, which I will probably find irritating.

Rats, I was hoping no one would find out about how much power I wield over the world. But now that you know, tremble, for my benevolence in not finishing the fic will only last so long!

Well, hopefully, anyway . . .

Hee. I know what you mean. My sisters have been known to ban me from watching films of books with them...

And, as for LOTR... "That's different, that's very different, and what the hell have they done to [fill in the blank]?" FARAMIR??! (Or Theoden, Eomer... But especially Faramir, curse them.)

(And I was told - geography of Middle Earth not being that much of a strong point from memory - that Faramir takes Frodo somewhere miles and miles away from where either of them have any business being at that point - maybe that was it?)

*butts out of thread again*

(Although amusingly, my middle sister got hooked on the Harry Potter books and pointed out every single difference in the first film to me over the phone. I was having trouble not laughing too much at that. :-D)

Yep, that was it. It's coming back to me now. There's a reason I only saw the movies once!
