catching up
Jul. 16th, 2010 10:43 pmJust got back from a trip, which was really convenient for me in terms of timing because now I'm back and it's . . .
ONE MORE DAY UNTIL THE PANDORICA OPENS!!!!!!!
Can you tell I'm excited? I think I've been looking forward to this finale since Moffat was first announced as the new show-runner. I can't wait to see what he's thought up!
In other DW-watching, I've recently seen the only two episodes that still exist for "Wheel in Space," which was both happy-making because I thoroughly enjoyed them both, and sad-making because the other parts of it are no longer around to enjoy. I also finished "Doctor Who and the Silurians," which was really excellent. The ending was especially powerful, and that's despite the fact that I'd been spoiled for it; I can only imagine what it must have been like for someone who had no idea that was coming. And hey, a question for you Brig/Liz shippers out there -- even I noticed how solicitous Liz was when the Brig finally came safely out of those tunnels, and I normally have to be hit over the head in order to see shippiness. So now I'm curious -- what sparked the ship for you? Was it that moment, or a similar-type moment in another episode? Or was it just a general sense of chemistry between them? Or was it something else?

Date: 2010-07-17 06:10 am (UTC)I AM EXCITED TOO!.... far more than I have any real right to be given that I've already seen it, but I watched it on a tiny screen on a streaming site. I wanna see it on my family's big screen TV.
As for Liz/Brig, I ended up liking them by way of fanfic XD. Since a number of authors I read write Liz/Brig I gave them a shot, and ended up wanting to watch the episodes with the two of them. I did feel like they had chemistry from the moment they started interacting though, in Spearhead From Space... even if it was filled with tension.
I hope your trip went well.

That's very interesting that you got into Liz/Brig through fanfic. I didn't notice any special chemistry between them in "Spearhead," but as I said, I normally have to be hit over the head to notice these things. In fact, I wonder if I would've noticed that moment in "Silurians" if I hadn't known that Liz/Brig is a popular ship. But it is a bit of an insidious ship once it's in your head . . . hmm, maybe I should go back and watch "Spearhead" again and see what I think now!
The trip did go very well, thanks!

Date: 2010-07-17 06:13 am (UTC)But once I started watching the show, Caroline and Nicholas' chemistry just leapt off the screen at me!
YAY for The Pandorica Opens! I predict you will be screaming "Nooooo!" and wanting to watch The Big Bang as soon as the final credits roll on TPO!

It has occurred to me that even though I've made it all the way to now, the one thing left that could break my resolve to wait for a BBCA broadcast might just be that cliffhanger for TPO (whatever it is) . . . we'll see!

I'd say it's entirely possible! If you DO hold out - well, I think a special award will be in order. (But if you can't wait, no one will think badly of you!)

Date: 2010-07-17 08:44 am (UTC)And that is a very good question, and one I'm happy to answer at length... *cough* Anyway, Spearhead From Space was one of 3 Pertwee vids I owned for a long time... and just watch the Brig chatting her up at the start... Sorry, I mean interviewing her. (But there is a theory that says you can't screencap the two of them from that serial in the same shot that doesn't look wrong out of context. It seems to be true.) And then the wretched Doctor swans in and swipes her from under his nose. Poor Brig. It was all going so well.
So I kind of had it fixed in my head before I saw the rest, but Inferno, whatever else it tells us, also very strongly implicates that in a world without the Doctor, the Brigadier and Liz get together. In a disturbing way, but still... And in Ambassadors, when the villain says "I've killed your friends at UNIT, ha ha." to Liz, does she do what pretty much any other single white companion would do and gasp "The Doctor?" No. Her reaction is: "The Brigadier?!"
Silurians was the last one I saw properly, and now I think it might be the shippiest of them all. It's just a fun, sarky UST, never-going-to-happen ship. Perfect for writing snarky dialogue in fic. So I did. :-) Actually - and I don't think she's really around anymore sadly -
Plus the commentary for Spearhead is also encouraging in these matters. Nicholas Courtney explains about the Brigadier's love life, and on mentioning his divorce, Caroline John says, "He should have gone to Cambridge."
Nick: Eh?
Caroline: Where Liz went.
Nick: Oh, no, he married Doris.
Caroline: Doris!?!
Among other things.
And I am very proud to have corrupted Pers. :-D

Date: 2010-07-17 08:23 pm (UTC)No, sadly, Ambassadors is the outstanding serial from S7 - one day! It's really the 'worst' one of the run, but I love it to bits. I love the overblown pre-credits/title bit where it goes 'The Ambassadors... of DEATH'; the eerie space suits, UNIT storm a warehouse and look convincing, the Doctor and the Brig make up after The Silurians (aw), Liz wears a silly hat and tells her kidnapper not to worry, she won't hurt him; and best of all Sgt Benton turns up, and murders a hapless professor. It has padding, I admit, but I love it. (You can tell, can't you?) It's sort of the least shippy for Brig/Liz, but I see it there anyway. ;lol:
And in answer to the below, I see Pers has mentioned pretty much all I wrote. I think most people like the Five Times fic the best, and it probably is one of the better fics I've done. However, I have a soft spot for the first two of the Season 7 series - Haunting, in which I threw in nearly every 70s cliche I could think of, and Invisible Man. In fact the series then became Liz/Brig + cliche (which was why
And, awww, am blushing for the fic-related compliments on this thread now.

Date: 2010-07-17 09:06 am (UTC)The aforementioned Sleepy_sheep's paired fics An Unexpected Education and No More Than A Feeling are great. (Although her Donna/Brig fic is completely disturbing but also hilarious and brilliant, I should add!)
Netgirl_y2k's All These Things That We've Done is wonderful, and shippy about as much as S7. ... And Atraphoenix has remixed it as The Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow Remix, which is equally good - and she wrote a great little Brig/Liz AU, mostly focusing on Susan, but see The Slow Path.
And Johne wrote me a birthday Brig/Liz ficlet, which is very nice: A Turn in the Park.
Gary Merchant's A Fresh Start considers Brig/Liz as the reason Liz left (as do many of the others.)
The best one, I think, is this: Settiai's Moving Forward.
I may have
got obsessedwritten some a while back, too. ;-)I did say I could answer this at length - but since both the above said it was ficcing that started them off, I thought you ought to have some recs. :-)

A Matter of Timing is a lot of fun!
A Stitch in Time - and if you enjoy this you must help me oppress
Matchmaking is set in the middle of Atraphoenix's fic "The Slow Path" (as mentioned by
Five Times Liz Shaw and the Brigadier Saved the World is basically the whole of Liz's TV season, but without Three. It's probably my fave of her stuff.
