Finally home, and it's the first time I've had real access to the internet for over a week, so I am slowly catching up on LJ stuff. Of course, the first thing I had to do when I got home tonight was watch "Planet of the Dead."

.

I thought it was okay. Not great, but fine; basically, a typical "Doctor Who" episode. I liked seeing UNIT -- although was I the only one who half-expected to see Torchwood crash the party? Maybe I was just hoping for a Jack cameo. But seeing more of Magambo was nice, and the scientific-advisor-fanboy-guy was good for comic relief (even though I really wanted Liz Shaw to show up and slap him).

"Robot" reference for the win! Although really, if you're going to pick an old DW UNIT episode to reference, you pick "Robot"? How about a little Zygon love? Or Yeti? But I loved David's little smile, like "wasn't that giant robot cool?" Which it really wasn't, but now I can misremember it that way.

I didn't end up caring about any of the new characters -- not even Christina what's-her-face -- except maybe for the Fly Captain who didn't want to abandon his ship. I liked him. The stingrays reminded me of those things in "Empire Strikes Back" that were chewing on the power cables. And all that sand was very . . . sandy.

The part where the Doctor said he was through taking companions along was very sad. It hinted at him being very emotionally damaged, and I really hope that gets addressed more in the upcoming specials.

Spooky prophecy stuff at the end . . . "your song is ending" (haven't we heard that before?) and "knock four times" ("Midnight" reference) . . . hmm, feels like it's being mysterious for the sake of being mysterious. I hope there's a good payoff and not just a weird beetle on someone's back.

I also saw a hilarious review of the special done by Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppets. It does have spoilers, so if you haven't seen the episode itself, then wait until you've seen it. But bookmark the page to remind yourself to watch it -- really, it's that good.
