Just watched last night's Battlestar Galactica finale, and I feel like getting some thoughts down about what I thought of it and of the series in general. Those of you who don't care about BSG (or haven't yet seen the finale and don't want to be spoiled), click away now.

First off, I have a confession to make: I never got into this "reimagined" series of Battlestar Galactica. I have no idea why not. I tend to like science fiction in general, and I was a huge fan of the original Battlestar Galactica when it first aired back during my teenage years. But even though I was able to recognize the show as being of excellent quality, it somehow never captured me. I don't think there's a single character I really care about, or ever cared about. I don't know, maybe I got turned off by all the gritty / violent / hand-held camera stuff? Possible.

Anyway, I did check back in with the show often enough to be sort of aware of what was going on, and I was interested enough to watch (and record) the finale. There were a few moments where I got confused due to not having seen all the past episodes, but in general I was able to follow everything.

And . . . hmm. Battle stuff -- bored me. Going after Hera -- didn't care. I've never liked Hera, or understood why she was important. Even at the very end, I still don't understand why she was important. Looks to me like there were lots and lots of opportunities for human/cylon baby-making on Earth II, or am I wrong about that? And because there could have been lots of others, that also took away the importance of Hera being mitochondrial Eve, at least for me. Who cares? Well, obviously some people, but not me.

Colonizing Earth II in the past (otherwise known as "Earth" to the rest of us) was a cool concept, and I liked the flash-forward to present-day NYC (and why do I never ever see people filming scenes like this when they're obviously filmed here?). I also liked the round-and-round-we-go does-nothing-ever-change philosophizing at the end. But, I didn't really care for the "angels are among us" stuff with angel-Gaius or angel-Six (or angel-Starbuck, for that matter). Even classic BSG managed to make their "angels" and "devil" into a science-fictiony advanced race instead of "messengers from God / the gods / insert-your-deity-here."

But, it was a well-done show, with great writing and acting and an appropriately epic finish. I wish I liked it more. On the other hand, I don't really need to get obsessed with another television show, especially one that's now over, even if it does look like they're going to keep trotting out spin-offs of some sort or other for the next 150,000 years . . .
