Dear Yuletide Writer
Oct. 26th, 2015 03:09 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I already know you are wonderful, awesome and amazing because you matched me on one of these fandoms! And here you are reading this letter, which means you have come to my journal to try to find out more about me and the fic requests I made. That is very nice and thoughtful of you -- thank you!
Please don't worry too much about my optional details. I tried to give you a general sense of why I chose these particular characters and fandoms, and perhaps provide you with a prompt idea or two. But I am well aware that optional details are optional! Also, I find that the best fics are usually the ones that the author really wanted to write. Follow your muse; chances are that it is going to lead you to a better story than I will.
But here you are, reading this letter, and so the least I can do is tell you a little more information about myself. Like most people, I do have general things I tend to like and dislike in a story. So, here we go:
General dislikes:
-- Smut, especially smut for smut's sake, and explicit descriptions of sex in general. I'm not really into it.
-- Pairing up characters that were not romantically paired in canon. I'm not a big shipper, and creating new het and slash pairings out of canon characters doesn't usually work for me.
--Torture, non-con and dub-con scenes. Just not my thing.
General likes:
-- Most story genres aside from PWP. This includes angst, action/adventure, hurt/comfort, humor/crack, and fluff.
-- I tend to prefer stories that have a rating of PG-13 or lower, as a general rule. (This goes with the "dislikes" above.)
-- If you're stuck and need a more specific direction, some of my specific likes are: stories that explore the characters, stories that play off of something we saw in an episode, missing scenes, tags, and stories from another person's point of view. But I like a wide range of story types, so don't worry if your story idea doesn't fit with any of that. What you want to write is what I most want to read, truly.
Feel free to look through my journal -- it's 99% public, after all -- and take a look at my fanfic at the Doctor Who archive (most of my fic is Whoniverse-related) and at AO3.
Here are my requests again, so everything's in one place:
Quark
Any
This is my most obscure request -- if you're not familiar with the show, it's an American sci-fi comedy from 1977-78, created by Buck Henry (of "Get Smart" fame) and starring Richard Benjamin as Quark, the commander of a United Galaxy Sanitation Patrol ship (a garbage scow). You can find more information here. I said "any" characters because I would love fic featuring any of the characters from this show, including the characters that weren't nominated. I have no dislikes here -- it's all good! I'd prefer comedy / parody / spoof if you can manage it in this fandom, along the lines of what the show did so well: taking sci-fi tropes and absolutely skewering them. What if there was an Invasion of the Space Baggies? Or Quark and crew were accidentally hurled backwards in time? Or one of the crewmembers got alien superpowers? I'd love to see a sci-fi situation taken to its silliest extreme, like the show did with "The Source." This is also a fandom where I'd be happy to see a crossover, if that happens to be your thing. How would the intrepid crew of the United Galaxy Sanitation Patrol fare against characters from, say, Star Trek (any incarnation), or Doctor Who (any era), or Star Wars, or Galaxy Quest, or Red Dwarf?
Sarah Jane Adventures
Any (Maria, Alan, Clyde, Gita)
I said "any" because I would love to see fic with any of the four nominated characters, by themselves or in any combination. My one request is please don't pair any of these characters up with each other romantically; I love the friend / family relationships they have in canon. I'd prefer to get something in the same tone as the show, although humor / crack is also always welcome.
It's been way too long since I've seen new SJA fic with either Maria or Alan, but they're great characters with a wonderful family dynamic. Maria reminds me of a young Sarah Jane. Alan becomes especially interesting to me once he knows about the existence of aliens. Clyde is my favorite of the teenagers; he has my vote for "most likely to join Team TARDIS." As for Gita, I adore her. She's just so bubbly, and mercenary, and kind, and slightly irritating. I've requested and received Gita!fic for Yuletide in the past, but I'd love more, especially as she doesn't often show up in SJA fanfic. Don't feel constrained to just these four characters, though -- I'd be happy to see other SJA or Whoniverse characters appear too, as long as the focus remains on one or more of these four.
If you'd like some prompt ideas, how about a fic where Alan gets lessons on aliens from Maria and Clyde? Or what if Maria and Clyde get into alien-based trouble, and it's Alan to the rescue instead of Sarah? Or what if Clyde gets into a situation where he has to distract Gita from aliens? Or if you want to get crazy and try for all four nominated characters in the same story, how about a fic where Alan is trying to keep the neighborhood alien activities under wraps while selling his house to Gita and Haresh?
Space: 1999
Tony Verdeschi, Maya
I love Tony and Maya. I love them separately as characters, and I love them together as a "you say you're not in love but we know you really are" couple. I'm not a big shipper, but this is the big exception -- I think they eventually married each other and lived happily ever after. So if you like to write shippy stories, go for it! (Please no explicit sex, though -- G or PG rating would be great.) On the other hand, I also think it took them a long time to get there, so a story that doesn't focus on them as a couple works, too -- I love genfic, and I'm primarily a gen writer myself. Some ideas: Tony and Maya's first meeting; Moonbase Alpha coming across something from Psychon civilization; or maybe a missing scene or a tag around one or more broadcast episodes? Really, just feel free to explore whatever you find interesting about these characters.
