In celebration of Halloween, let me rec three wonderfully cracky zombie-themed fics in three completely different fandoms. (Note that all stories are rated G or PG.)

First up, from Yuletide 2009, it's Wait Wait Don't Eat Me by nestra, a hilarious take-off on National Public Radio's "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" quiz show.

PETER: Thanks, Carl! Hello, everyone! We're going to be cutting our show a little short today, because, as you may have heard, there's an apocalypse happening! But we didn't let the election of Barack Obama stop us, and we're not going to let the zombie hordes stop us either. After the show today, myself, Carl, and the panelists will be taking our families to the secret underground NPR bunker, and no, you can't come. I bet you wish you'd donated more during that last pledge drive!

Next is a West Wing fanfic, The Great Zombie Invasion of 2001 by netgirl_y2k. Because what could be better than the staff of the White House dealing with a zombie invasion?

The Joint Chiefs wanted to know if any of the zombies were American.

The Surgeon General speculated that it might be a virus of some kind.

The Vice President wanted to know if his evacuation from Paris could be fast tracked, please.

The ACLU coined the name 'Undead American.'

And finally, here's my favorite zombie fic in Doctor Who: Nine and a Half by AstroGirl. The Ninth Doctor's regeneration into Ten goes a little bit wrong, and . . .

Rose shook her head. "Completely and totally insane," she said, then laughed. "Well, as long as you're not goin' to want to eat my brain or something in the meantime."

"Of course not!" he said. "What a ridiculous thought. You humans and your silly stories. Brain-eating zombies and all. Complete rubbish!"

She patted his hand. "All right, all right. Didn't think you'd want to eat my brain anyway, inferior human that I am."

She laughed, and he laughed with her, but it didn't come easily. Because, now that she mentioned it... it was a disturbingly appetizing thought.

Heh, some great recs! I'd read both TWW and *(of course) the DW one. My flister [livejournal.com profile] belantana has a great love of apocalypse fic and found the West Wing one before she'd even finished the series. :-)

I came across the West Wing one while researching West Wing recs on [community profile] crack_van for your Halloween treat. Then I started thinking about other great zombie fics I'd read, and decided I should do a rec post. (Note that they're all crack, because that's the only way I can take my zombies. On the other hand, crack zombie apocalypse fic is a wonderful genre!)

 Yes, definitely! Whenever I write a zombie apocalypse (which usually only happens because of [livejournal.com profile] belantana), it never has any actual zombies in the fic. Just 'off-screen'. Zombies in themselves are messy and lack witty conversation.
