I have read books right away again after finishing them, but I don't watch episodes right away. I like to go online and see what others say about it, and often they mention little details that I missed, and then I watch it again the next day with new eyes.
When I am in full fandom modus, there literally is no space for anything else in my mind. Same when I found out that John Barrowman sings. For weeks I was only listening to his music. Thankfully that dies down after a while.
When I was in my full Stargate glory, I have not read any books for years. I was only reading fanfiction. I went to the library, randomly grabbing books, seeing if anything would interest me - nothing did. I did not care for any of these people on the pages that I didn't know.
I became a proper Doctor Who fan around the same time David Tennant left. I had watched it before, but then they stopped airing it in Germany so I lost a few years and only came back to it all when Torchwood started over here. I was catching up with old episodes from DVD, but the first of Matt Smith were the first I was watching "live" so to speak, right as they were happening. The ones filmed in Utah. I remember how they literally blew me away. I couldn't put my finger on what it was, the whole look of it, the filming angle, the widescreen? Was there widescreen? Looked like a movie. And the Moffat mystery, when it still was fresh and not overdone. And while waiting for the second episode I watched that first episode again and again and again. It's really rare that I do that. But sometimes it just happens and all you can do is ride the wave ;)
And then they were in that diner with River Song and I thought to myself, funny, in Utah they have the same Elvis at the toilet door like they do in Cardiff - and then I realized that these scenes actually were filmed in Cardiff, not in America. They even went out of their way to add a busy street outside the door via blue screen, while in Cardiff there is the bay and water. Here is my entry with pictures to prove it - and we were in the diner before they filmed there: https://dieastra.livejournal.com/29318.html
