That was the best Star Wars movie I've seen in 35 years.

First off, I have to say, the new Star Wars movie is very Star Wars. That seems a strange thing to say, but as someone who saw the original trilogy back when it first came out, I didn't think the prequel trilogy was very Star Wars. It had Star Wars-type things in it, but the "feel" of Star Wars was absent. But now, I am very happy to say, we are back to the type of movie that made me fall in love with this franchise as a child. (I can't quite articulate the exact reason why this is Star Wars and the prequel movies aren't, but take my word for it. It just felt like Star Wars had finally returned.)

I loved all the little fan-service-y references to the original trilogy. The chess set on the Millennium Falcon! The targeting computer on the Millennium Falcon! Actually, everything on the Millennium Falcon! Admiral Ackbar! (Okay, I didn't really like "Return of the Jedi" very much, but it was so much fun to see him again.) The visual callbacks to the Luke/Vader confrontation! The music, which kept repeating themes from the original trilogy! I also loved the continuity -- tie fighters, and x-wings, and stormtroopers, and First Order uniforms that looked like the Empire uniforms.

It was SO great to see Harrison Ford back as Han Solo, and Carrie Fisher as Leia, and Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca. (Yes, it was him in the suit again, and yes, I could tell!) And I love the new characters, too. Rey and Finn are wonderful, and I look forward to seeing more of them. I'm now wondering if Rey is Luke's daughter, partially based on the fact that they kept playing Luke's theme when she had big moments on screen. Certainly there is more backstory there that we have yet to learn. And Kylo Ren is very interesting, and I want to learn more of his story, too.

I am sad that they killed off Han, but it made sense within the context of the story, and it kicks things up a notch with Ren and Leia. And, well, they probably couldn't get Harrison Ford back for the other two movies. But I'm happy that he got so many good scenes in this one, as well as the best line: "The Force doesn't work like that!" (I am fully expecting that to become an internet meme.)

In sum: really, really good, and I want to go see it again. But first, I have some original trilogy re-watching to do.

Yes, I agree. It's a vast improvement over the prequel trilogy, and very Star Wars-y. :)

Han--I was braced for it. I thought that Harrison Ford had a ton of good scenes, so Han's death wasn't a throw away.

I wasn't overly attached to Kylo Ren. Something about him didn't quite...work for me. That may change on repeat viewings.

Yay! Star Wars is back!

No, Han's death definitely wasn't a throw-away, or out of left field. That didn't stop me from going "NOOOOOO!" when it happened, but it was well done. I'm happy that we got so many great Han Solo scenes first, though!

And yeah, I wouldn't say I'm attached to Kylo Ren either, but I'm still curious about what happened to make him into Vader Jr. We might start caring about him more as we get to know him better, though. We'll see!
