In a severe case of tempting Fate/Plot Bunnies, I asked my FList what original fiction character they'd like to see me write (ie not a character from a fandom) - and someone gave me "a scholar researching a mystery, preferably historical". I realised that I didn't have a 'career' lined up for Ms Dora Hilditch of my 'Hilditch & Key' original fic story (paranormal detectives in an Alternate History - how many genres can I mash?!) - although the other four characters all have jobs/careers: Dr Maryam Sabeti is a WW1 VAD turned doctor training to be a psychiatrist; Edward Jesson is a former lawyer turned Detective Inspector; Jimmy Locke is a genius mechanic; and Ms Hilda Key (nee Hildegarde Kerbitz) is a female German equivalent to Alan Turing.
So now Hilditch is an amateur scholar with an interest in Out of Place Artefacts who'll end up investigating several OOP Artefacts turned up during work by the Imperial War Graves Commission to create cemetaries and memorials to the dead of WW1.
So, one plot bunny duly tamed!
Only problem is - this is too much to fit into the current fic, which means I'll be writing a sequel to 'The Mysterious Lodge'. Oh well!
