More on Jessica Jones

Still non-spoilery, so no cuts, but I went for it and got Netflix streaming, and I've been binge-watching Jessica Jones all day.

Well, except for the times when I find myself surfing the internet for David's video diaries and clips of him singing with the Proclaimers, just to remind myself that there really is no need for me to be afraid of David Tennant.

David's so good in the role. He actually makes you care about Kilgrave even though the man is an evil psychopath.

Oh, and I totally agree about your other comment about David using his English accent. Kilgrave would have been way less intimidating if David had used his horrible American accent.

It really is an amazing show -- the writing and the acting is all top-notch. All the characters feel complex and real, despite some of them having superpowers. And David is, of course, stellar as usual.

Except for when he does an American accent. He just absolutely cannot do one at all. I can't even imagine if he'd tried to use it for Kilgrave. Instead of being creeped out by the character, I'd probably just start laughing whenever he said anything.

His Gracepoint accent had odd bits of a New York tilt to it to me, especially the way he said "Solano" (which thus sounded weird for a character supposedly out in California). At least that might have been more appropriate in JJ!

His Gracepoint accent was just bizarre, end of story. There's no way it could pass for a New York accent. But now you've got me wondering if DT can do an Eastern-European accent.

You might be interested in this article: Leave David Tennant alone – he makes a pretty good American, which goes into a little more depth than usual about hits and misses of the phonetics. I was amused at "He's no Hugh Laurie, I admit", especially since the context in which alumfelga linked me to this in the first place had already brought up Hugh Laurie, and "Tennant is not quite our revenge for Dick Van Dyke", whose Cockney I gather is legendarily bad (though of course I'm American so it doesn't sound quite as terrible to me as it might otherwise). And I suppose it's definitely true I've heard American accents as bad as that - Peri Brown's comes to mind - and David's is at least not quite in that league of badness.

That was an interesting article, thanks! But I don't agree -- DT made a terrible American. As for Peri, I honestly didn't realize she was even trying to do an American accent when I first saw those episodes. I just thought it was a very weird English accent. So yes, you're right, he's not as bad as Nicola Bryant, I'll give him that.

For what it's worth, in the few samples of more recent Big Finish audios I've heard that involve her, her accent has much improved.

That's good to know. And to be fair, I just saw episode 9, and it had someone else (not DT) doing an English accent, and it just sounded off to me, so I looked up the actress and sure enough, she's American. So, well done DT on doing a good English accent (which I'm not really qualified to judge, but it must be good because he gets asked to use it quite a lot. Or else people just really don't want to make characters Scottish. One or the other.)

It took me a while to get into Jessica Jones. I'd say maybe four episodes--I knew very little about her backstory and was confused during the early going. Once I learned about her history with Kilgrave, I liked it a lot more and found it to be much more interesting. And yes, David was very good in it.

As for his American accent, though, that is just bad. So glad he didn't use it for this show.

I didn't know anything about her backstory, but it still hooked me right from the start. I'd heard the show was dark, so I didn't want to pay for it until I knew if I would like it, so I'm glad I got the chance to sample it for free. And, even better, it's turned out that Netflix is giving me a free month of streaming even though I've been a DVD customer of theirs for years. At the rate I'm going through episodes, I'll easily be done within the month, so I get to see the whole thing for free.

David is indeed very good. It's interesting to see him as a villain, too. I'm glad that even with his high-profile "hero" characters (the Doctor, Alec Hardy), he still gets to do this kind of a role. He seems to have very successfully avoided being stereotyped, which is great to see.
