Day of the Clown

My review of SJA's "Day of the Clown," both parts.

Hmmm, alien creature of no particular fixed form who lives off of fear, does things to generate more fear, was responsible for a famous fear-inducing historical event and in the end gets defeated by people laughing at him. What an incredibly original idea that has never ever been done before except for on a completely obscure show that no one's ever heard of.

Yes, the entire climax was ruined for me by thoughts of "Redjac! Redjac!" and the fact that all the laughing people on the Enterprise were far more interesting to watch than Clyde's pathetic stand-up routine.

To be fair, there were things I liked: the mention of Aunt Lavinia (yes, I admit it, I'm a fangirl for continuity); Lis Sladen's acting (she's great at being terrified and brave); and, um, yeah I think that was about it actually.

The clown stuff didn't do anything for me -- just standard "I'm an alien and I'm Jack the Ripper evil" and the "feel" of the show was way off due to the sad absence of Maria. Rani is okay but not particularly interesting, and personally I'd be fine with never seeing her again. Out of all the new characters I think I actually like Gita best; I suspect she's sharper than she lets on. Can we have an episode where we dump the remaining teenagers and just go with Sarah, Gita and Chrissie? Pretty please?
