Ficlet: Silly Question

A long time ago, I started working on a prompt table from the challenge community [profile] 50ficlets. While I never came close to doing 50, I did write some ficlets, and kept my claim open in the hope that I would be inspired to write more.

Then just a few days ago, I decided to take a whack at another prompt. Ironically, at almost the same time, the [profile] 50ficlets community announced that they are shutting down. However, the mod said that people are welcome to still use the prompt tables, so here is my latest ficlet. Who knows -- now that I definitely don't have to do all 50, maybe I'll even keep going?

Title: Silly Question
Rating: G
Characters: Sarah Jane, the Fourth Doctor
Word count: 174
Disclaimer: This is a work of fan fiction, offered freely. Doctor Who and all characters belong to the BBC.
Summary: Sarah asks a silly question.
A/N: Written from a prompt table supplied by 50ficlets. Prompt: Hand on heart.

"Doctor?" asked Sarah. "What's it like to have two hearts?"

"Hmm?" The Doctor looked up from the TARDIS console. "That's an odd question. Why do you ask?"

Sarah shrugged. "Just curious. Tell me. What's it like?"

The Doctor pushed his hat back from his face and regarded her. "What's it like to have one heart?"

Sarah laughed. "Normal."

"Exactly." The Doctor pulled his hat back down, then returned to the console. "You humans ask the silliest questions."

"Oy," protested Sarah, following him. "Don't you get all superior on me. I've seen you ask far sillier questions."

"Nonsense," said the Doctor. "Only a human would demand to know what it's like to not be human."

Sarah gave an annoyed tug on his scarf, then placed her hands on his chest to feel the double heartbeat within. "You can't blame me for wondering, though. Sometimes you act very human."

"And sometimes," said the Doctor, "you act very Time Lord."

"I know," said Sarah. "I ask silly questions, don't I?"

And she grinned at him.

I liked that ficlet.

50 ficlets is a lot to write. I don't think I could write 50 on one person/pairing.

So far, I've only managed 12. It's a great prompt table, though! Now that all the prompts are open for the taking, you should take a look: http://50ficlets.livejournal.com/1778.html

I've been working on Table 5.

Glad you liked this ficlet! I think my success rate on these prompts has been . . . middling? Some have been nice little ficlets, some have been, um, slightly embarrassing, and some have been really good, full-fledged fics that I'm happy to have written.

Aw, that's sweet. :-)

And, yes, it is nice to see fic from you! I'm amused about the timing, though. (And that is a slightly melodramatic announcement post, I have to say. LJ's glory days may be over, but I doubt that fanfic's done quite yet.)

Thanks!

It is a very melodramatic announcement, isn't it? Still, it was nice of the mod to throw the prompts open to all, and nice to even keep the comm open to posting, although it seems silly to post there now.

And yes, I think fanfic is going to stick around for awhile yet . . . :D

:-)

Sounds like things were getting on top of the mod - it is nice to have left everything open, rather than closing everything or, worse, deleting things. And those prompt tables were rather lovely... (Especially Table 5!)

I started tag wrangling on the AO3 a few weeks ago (am still v new and clueless as yet) and, yes... I don't think we're running short on people writing fic yet!!
