I guess they meant "The Women of New Who" . . .

Watching the BBC America special "The Women of Doctor Who" right now, and already I'm very disappointed because it's clear they're doing New Who only. It doesn't look like they're even going to mention Sarah Jane. Instead it was all Rose Rose Rose, and now that we're past the first commercial break it's Martha Martha Martha. I guess Donna will be up next, and then Amy, and then River Song, and the show will be over? Or maybe they'll do River Song, and then Amy. Ooh, suspense!

Wait a minute, Yvonne Hartman?! They're doing Yvonne Hartman now. Why? This makes no sense. Why Yvonne and not Jackie? Or Harriet Jones?

Okay, and now Idris?? I have no idea where they're going now. They haven't even done Donna yet. Are they saving Donna for later?

Okay, I guess I have to keep watching now just to see what they do next. It's still a disappointment, though. It would've been so much better if they'd started with Barbara.

ETA: Okay, they did just do Sarah. All the clips were from New Who, but they did slip in a couple of stills from the '70s.

Gah! I'm glad I missed that. I learned last year to skip any BBCA-produced Doctor Who specials because they are embarassingly bad.

[identity profile] dbskyler.livejournal.com 2012-08-12 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, these BBCA "specials" are really not very special at all. They also all apparently follow the same format of clips interspersed with inane comments from people you've mostly never heard of. For some bizarre reason, this special did have some comments from Peter Davison, though -- BBCA must have cornered him somewhere. But overall, you didn't miss anything.

Five is "my" Doctor, so I'm glad whenever Peter D shows up, but that makes no sense. Why restrict a show to New Who females and interview a Classic Who Doctor for it? * piles on more disgust for BBCA* I bet we still have to put up with that corny opening sequence again too this year.

[identity profile] dbskyler.livejournal.com 2012-08-13 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
It definitely made no sense. Well, Peter was fine -- he knew what he was talking about, and he had an opinion -- but it was "random actor whom you might recognize" talk; nothing was connected to Peter or his time on the show. Not even when they did a sequence on Jenny. I mean, come on, you've cornered Peter Davison with a camera, you're doing Jenny, have him talk about what it was like seeing his daughter on Doctor Who! But nope, there was no comment from him about Jenny at all. Maybe they were too embarrassed to ask him?

I feared that would be the case and resolved not to watch it and disappoint myself.

Good call.

I see somewhere else that they did a poll to go with it... and Rose came out as the Greatest Woman in Who. *cries* (I don't think she even makes it to the Greatest Woman in New Who, for me. *despairs at the state of the world*)

I don't even watch the Confidential things because of lack of Old Who clips. It's sad. Still, we should get some nice things for our anniversary next year. You can't celebrate 50 years while only mentioning things that happened since 2005. Even people of little maths would notice.

I am glad they eventually remembered to mention Sarah. I hope they put Harriet Jones in at some point, too. I think she's more awesome than Rose. :-)

[identity profile] taiamu.livejournal.com 2012-08-12 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That poll was ridiculous. I'm sad to see at the special seems even more ridiculous. At least they did mention Sarah. Maybe I'll hunt the special down online.

You can probably find it at the BBCA website. I advise you to fast-forward to the Sarah Jane section, though.

I like to think the poll was mostly taken by a bunch of teenagers who haven't watched much of the show. That would certainly explain the results. ; )

No, they didn't include Harriet Jones, but they did include Cassandra! Can you imagine? Who came up with their list?! (And yes, Harriet is far more awesome than Rose.)

We better get some nice things for the anniversary! Much as I would love to see a multi-Doctor episode, I confess that I would be even more excited to see Classic Who companions come back. No issues about actors aging, and nostalgia for all!

(Okay, they can bring Tom Baker back, too. If they do, I promise to overlook his white hair.)

Heh, but I did a poll and we all agree we wanted the Eighth Doctor back, with penguins!

I stand by that being a conclusive poll of what everybody would want. LOL

How can you have Cassandra but not Jackie or Harriet Jones? That is pretty rubbish. I can understand people voting for Rose, but I'm just still muttering that obviously the greatest woman of Who is BARBARA. Or Leela, or Romana, or Sarah, or Ace etc. etc. Or, really, they are all pretty awesome.

But, you know. Barbara. She was the only one who told the Doctor he was an ungrateful old man who ought to get down on his hands and knees and thank her. (And, indeed, so he should. He owes her a lot.) Plus, her cardigans are deadly weapons in the right hands. (Ian's.)

Aw. Well, DW is great, and I hope the celebrations are fun, whatever they do. But no matter how unwise it is, I really want the modern version of The Five Doctors where there are multiple Doctors and nobody cares if it is rubbish, because we are all having too much fun to complain. :-) But Eight and Eleven and Penguins, obviously.

(I'm just thinking now - if the anniversary year involves penguins in any way, shape or form, I shall be highly amused!!)

[identity profile] pitry.livejournal.com 2012-08-12 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
BUT BUT BUT JACKIE.

I hope they did mention Jackie later on. Because JACKIE.

... More to the point, I agree with the grumbling - where's Liz? Jo? Romana (both of them)? Ace? Even Tegan - I'm not really a fan, but she was very important! That's just ridiculous, esp. mentioning a character that appeared in one (!) episode (or two, really) over them.

[identity profile] dbskyler.livejournal.com 2012-08-13 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
No, there was no mention of Jackie! And there totally should have been. The special didn't even do a good job of "The Women of New Who!" No Jackie, no Harriet, no Reinette. But they did throw in Yvonne Hartman and Cassandra. Why, BBCA, why?

I really am thinking about writing them a letter of complaint saying that the next time they promise a Doctor Who special, they actually cover Doctor Who, not just Doctor Who since 2005.

[identity profile] primsong.livejournal.com 2012-08-14 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think you should - though first find something nice and soft to bash your head into when they come back with "Uhhh...there was Doctor Who before 2005?"
