Beautifully done. The Doctor has never been comfortable with good-byes (even in the Classic Series, he tended to not handle companions leaving of their own free will well-all stilted and awkward), so it would make perfect sense that he'd prefer to be there at the beginning instead. And I think Sarah Jane would've appreciated that.

Does make me wonder who else's names are in the notebook, besides the obvious ones.
