So I bid on a fanvid in the [community profile] help_haiti auction and lost out in a bidding war, but I still feel really good about it because my being willing to pay $250 for the vid meant that I helped raise over $200 more for Haiti! Wish I could have bid higher, but I'm only part-time employed right now . . . and even if I were employed full-time, I don't know if I could have prevailed because I saw this same bidder going high on other auctions, so I think they have a lot of money. Good for them for being willing to donate it, though.

Meanwhile I made a last-minute contact with another vidder, and she may be willing to do the vid for me later (either as part of the February auction or else she might accept my offer to donate now in return for future work). I feel a little guilty, though, because I asked for Doctor/Sarah in the fanvid (I know, I can hear your collective gasps of shock now) and this vidder hasn't ever seen a Four episode, so she would have to go do a lot of background research to make it for me. I feel really lucky that she's even considering it, and as I said, also guilty that the vid would put her to all that trouble. On the other hand, shouldn't every fan of Doctor Who see some Tom Baker episodes? (She has seen episodes with One and Five, so it's not as if she's solely a New Who fan.) And isn't the Hinchcliffe era considered one of the best by lots of people, not just sad SJS fans like myself? So maybe I don't have to feel too guilty about it . . . although it is still a lot of work, and a very nice thing for her to consider, and I am very appreciative of it. Anyway, haven't heard yet if she's decided to accept my offer or not, and it may take her a few days to think it through. We'll see what happens!

I didn't end up offering anything myself, although I did hem and haw about it for a long time. Mostly I had a hard time believing that anyone would want to donate in return for fic from me. And then, what if I got zero offers? How embarrassing! But I think that for the February auction I will suck it up and offer anyway, because every little bit helps, even if it's only a few dollars.

In other "force for good" news, I am reccing Calufrax this week, and grinning like a madwoman every time one of my recs garners a new review for the author. One interesting thing, though -- why is it that when other people rec on Calufrax I think they have authoritative knowledge on what makes good fic, but when I rec on Calufrax it's "well, I think these are good, maybe someone will agree?" while looking around nervously? But I do think that all of the stories I've chosen deserve recognition, so I'm happy to be in a position to recognize them this week.

It's been a good week for feeling like a force for good in the world.

Haha. You're ruining the statistics of 100 reads per review!!!! (I did it too. ALL THE TIME! It just warms your heart to see a small ignored fic doubling its reviews, doesn't it? :) )

Sorry to hear you're having a Week of Doom. Hope it starts to get better soon!

Oooh, cheers. It;s a good Week of Doom though! Just... doomish.
