I've had Doctor Who on in the background for hours today, as BBC America is running a marathon. In between episodes, they're putting in little "behind the scenes" interview clips with Peter Capaldi. All well and good, except Capaldi keeps referring to his character as "Doctor Who," not "The Doctor." It's driving me crazy.

Really, really hoping that Moffat has a quiet word in his ear and gets this fixed. Surely it bothers him, too?

ETA: And they just showed a brief interview from "The Ultimate Time Lord" special, where Peter Davison interviewed Peter Capaldi. This was the way the conversation went (I swear, I'm not exaggerating):

Davison: So how long have you wanted to play the Doctor?
Capaldi: I never thought I would get to play Doctor Who.
Davison: Are you enjoying playing the Doctor?
Capaldi: It's amazing to be Doctor Who.
Davison: blah blah the Doctor blah blah?
Capaldi: blah blah Doctor Who blah blah.

I think I'm going to have to stop watching Capaldi interviews. It's a silly thing to be bothered by, but it bothers me so freakin' much.

I haven't watched any of the Davison segments yet, but that might change now because that sounds kind of hilarious. Was Davison actively trying to correct him and Capaldi kept on not noticing?

:lol: But Doctor Who isn't actually incorrect, either, and Capaldi's an old school fan. He knows the War Machines wanted Doctor Who. Doctor Who is required! And that the Second Doctor called himself Doctor von Wer... It's in the credits, you know - "Doctor Who". ;-p

(Not that I don't have to bite my tongue in rl when people ask me about "Doctor Who". But, to be fair, it's not necessarily wrong at all. It's probably got as much grounds for being right.)

Bless Peter Davison, though. :lol:

If Peter Capaldi persists in this, I feel sure monsters will try to kill him every week for you, so it should work out.

Capaldi does the same thing in an interview printed in TV Guide--the writer even mentions it like this:

In conversation, Capaldi, a longtime Who fan, often incorrectly refers to his character as "Doctor Who" rather than as "the Doctor"--which is usually how Who fans separate the geek from the chaff. But the actor harks back to the show's early days, when its hero was credited as "Doctor Who" on screen.


Capaldi calling the character Doctor Who is SO annoying. I can't stand it. At the DW conventions I've gone to, I don't remember ever hearing a single actor (including Davison, Colin Baker, McCoy, or McGann) use "Doctor Who" to mean the character--no one from behind the scenes has, either, IIRC. Hmm, there's probably a reason for that...
