I know! It is surprisingly entertaining, isn't it? :) ...and who'd have thought I'd watch this film and end up with Bruce Banner as my favourite Avenger. :D
I watched the first Iron Man at work so I probably can't exactly be the judge, but I don't think it's as entertaining as the Avengers. But it was entertaining! (I possibly have more of a tolerance for superheroes films than you do, though).
I initially had no interest, but then I heard so many good things about it, I had to see it! I'm not entertained by explosions and fight scenes, but the script was very good (Hooray! A good script in an action-adventure movie!) and I really enjoyed all the character moments and humor.
I especially enjoyed Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Or rather, I enjoyed him as Tony Stark -- once he was in the suit, he became a lot less interesting. But I'm guessing that Iron Man the movie will have at least some of that wonderful character snark, so now I want to see it. : )
Oh, yes. RDJ's Tony Stark is the king of snark ;) He's very snarky in Iron Man too, so that's alright! But I think he played off really well with the rest of the Avengers, something that doesn't exist in the Iron Man films - for example, I normally can't really stand Captain America, but when he was interacting with Tony Stark he was actually bearable and even amusing at times.
And yes, definitely about the script. I don't much mind explosions and fight scenes - hey, when you're doing my work for a while, you see all the various ways in which films can be bad, explosions or not. But it is a very good and humoristic script that made for a very entertaining film. :D I liked that it didn't try too much to be heavy and meaningful - I mean, it is an explosions-superhero film, it's not going to be profound. So it went for the clever laughs instead and did so brilliantly.

Yes! I think Whedon knew exactly what type of movie he wanted to make, and then nailed it.
