5 Days of Television Meme (aka 30 Days, the Heavily Abridged Version)
There's been an interesting "30 Days of Television" meme going around, and I thought about doing all 30 days, but while I've been enjoying reading other people's entries, there are really only a few of the 30 questions that I feel particularly motivated to answer. I may at some point go back and pick up some others, but for now, I am presenting Day 1 of the heavily abridged version, hereinafter to be known as the "5 Days of Television Abridged Meme."
Day 1: Favorite title sequence
I don't have a "favorite" favorite, but let me ramble a bit about some of my favorite title sequences. First, my vote for the funniest title sequence goes to Police Squad! If you're not familiar with the show -- and it only ran for 6 episodes before being canceled, so that's unfortunately very possible -- Police Squad! was a spoof of police detective dramas. Check out their opening:

In case you're wondering:
a) It was broadcast in 1982 -- long after the invention of color television.
b) No, Abraham Lincoln never actually appeared in the show other than in the opening titles.
c) The "special guest star" was a new actor every week. This actor was always killed off in the opening titles, and never showed up in the episode after that.
Another personal favorite is the title sequence from Man from U.N.C.L.E. I'm a sucker for a great theme tune, and this is one of the best (composed by Jerry Goldsmith). There were several great arrangements of it used over the years, but season two is my personal favorite:

Unfortunately, the titles don't last nearly long enough to really appreciate the theme, so I'll also link the closing titles. The images aren't as interesting, but there are pretty pictures of David McCallum, which is never a bad thing. Note that the show was filmed in Metrocolor! I love 60's television. Also note that the show would like to thank the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. I've always figured that U.N.C.L.E. must be related to UNIT . . . : )
Man from U.N.C.L.E. end titles
However, my vote for best opening titles has to go to a show that is widely considered to have one of the most iconic opening images ever. I have to agree. As for the theme tune (composed by Lalo Schifrin), it's not only top-notch, it's in 5/4! How awesome is that?
